Republican strategist Karl Rove urged Democrats to “go hard” at former President Trump’s rhetoric surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, calling the former president’s pledge to free imprisoned rioters a “critical mistake.”
“If they were smart, they’d take the January 6 and go hard at it. And they would say, ‘He wants to pardon these people who attacked our Capitol,'” Rove said told MSNBC’s Ari Melber.
“One of the critical mistakes made in this campaign is that Donald Trump has now said ‘I’m going to pardon those people because they’re hostages,'” Rove said in the interview, which aired Wednesday. “No, they’re not, they’re thugs.”
Trump said last month that his first act if elected to the White House would be to free the imprisoned Jan. 6 rioters, whom he called “hostages.” The former president has expressed sympathy for those charged in connection with the insurrection on numerous occasions and spoke last year at a fundraiser organized for Jan 6. defendants.

Tokyo Rove is never right about anything.
Does anyone care what this moron has to say anymore?
The people who indeed were violent instigators, definitely need punished.
The ones who entered an open door, while the cops welcomed them in and just walked around the capital taking videos... Those folks being in jail for years is ridiculous.
If rove says it is wrong, then clearly it is the right thing to do.
PDJT isn’t pledging an across the board pardon. He is advocating a complete review of each case and pardons where appropriate, which will be many.
Does anyone still think he’s a Republican?
This from the man who helped to elect President McCain and President Romney.
It is sad to see a Bush advisor from 20 years ago, who has been a poor commentator, still being paid to run his mouth.
Great advice. When Trump is elected Rove should be his chief of staff./s
I don’t understand why this guy has not been black bagged yet. 🙄
The Jan 6 event was 3 years ago. Most people remember it as “oh you mean the guy with the horns” and then laugh.
A Trump pardon pledge would likely have a negligible effect on votes.
What is desperately needed is an honest investigation as to what the truth is about January 6, 2021. And if I were conducting that investigation the first person who I would put under oath would be Ms Pelosi........
Having watched the corrupt criminal justice system up close and personal, especially since 2016, I’d be ok with DJT pardoning most people currently serving time. It’s a rigged system where the wealthy and politically connected receive special benefits.
Only politicians and a very small group of very vocal people even care about this.
The vast majority KNOW that those in prison are there for political purposes only.
Having said this, STFU rove.....
I agree, in that it is another comment Trump did not need to make, and may - may - hurt him for some “independent” votes in the general election. I agree in principle with Trump. but I would not have played that hand until after the election. Yes, his base has/will applaud the comment, but it was not a comment the base needed to stay with him. It was a gratuitous comment that may not benefit him and may cost some votes. Some in his base will say they don’t care about “those votes”, but they may when “those votes” represent the little margin between Trump and Biden and Biden wins the district.
Were the immigration, war, fiscal, trade and social policies of the Bush admin “critical mistakes”?
Or are we right where he intended us to be?
No kidding. I don’t recall seeing any attack on the Capitol on January 6th.
