WASHINGTON - On March 30, 1981, President Ronald Reagan was shot and seriously injured outside a Washington, D.C., hotel, along with three other people.
Jackson Bain was a news anchor for WTTG-TV, now FOX 5 DC, and quickly arrived on the scene after the shooting. He said it was one of the most confusing days in his lengthy journalism career.
"It was just amazingly confusing, because there was so much complete misinformation," he told LiveNOW & Then. "It was chaotic. And of course, there were limits to anything we could do."
As confusing as the day was, Bain said he did his best to gather information and inform the public while looking out for his own safety.

First breaking ABC reports showing the mayhem
So long ago yet seems like yesterday. It was a scary event concerning someone I admired.
And it was a deflection that nearly killed him. IIRC, one of the bullets bounced off a limousine door and went under his armpit and ended up just an inch or so away from the heart area.
I was working in a restaurant and one of the cooks came out and told us in broken English to turn on the TV in the bar. The first words I heard from Frank Reynolds were “...the president sustained a gunshot wound to the chest.” Customers filtered out from the dining room to watch the coverage. It was shocking as we had no idea at that time how serious it might be.
I was 19.
It was my birthday and I was two weeks out of the USAF sitting on the sofa in my in-law’s den with my wife.
I was at East Naples Middle School 7th grade math class at the time when the teacher told us about it. I didn’t yet realize how much I loved Reagan. Thank God he survived.
It is sad to note that the Presidency has gone so far downhill since then. Mind you, PDJT’s Presidency did briefly, buck that trend. Of course, looking at Biblical Prophecy, such a decline is not a surprise.
I wonder if Bush I was involved with this attempt too.
And now they released the shooter into society in case Trump is elected
I think I was in 4th grade. A teacher came in announced it.. iwas shocked.
General Alexander Haig: “Everything is under control. . . I’m in charge.”
Flew into the National Airport a few years after that. Came out of the terminal and noticed Haig standing on the sidewalk waiting on a ride. He was wearing a trench coat and smoking a cigarette.
I didn’t realize he was such a big guy. He looked to be every bit of 6’ 5”.
I was in the 1st grade when Kennedy was shot. Similar announcement situation. We were too young and stupid to understand the ramifications.
Ill never forget watching Ronnie walk into the hospital leaning on the agents cracking a joke. What a guy! He was the real deal.
I don’t believe Bush I was involved but there were certain oddities about the whole thing: 1) Hinckley’s father and mother were frequent dining companions of the Bushes; 2) GW Bush’s brother GH Bush’s son Neil was scheduled to have dinner with Hinckley’s brother in Denver the night after the attempt; 3) GH Bush was in charge of the investigation but assured us on the evening of it that Hinckley “acted alone” and there was no need to investigate further about a nutty conspiracy. Where else have we heard that??
Hinckley had psychiatric problems, his father was a big donor to a CIA front/Christian ministry in Tulsa....his profile seems to me to be similar to Arthur Bremer. Also, not sure if this is really true...but I’ve heard that Mark David Chapman was found clutching/reading a copy of I think Catcher in the Rye after supposedly shooting Lennon that was owned by Hinckley, Sr. Crazy, if true.
You are right though.
Hinckley was a “lone nut” who most assuredly “acted alone” and never mind that the vice president had all kinds of direct/indirect contact with the lone nut’s family....and never mind that it has been said that Haig was on the outs with the intel community, also.....Bush was their guy....and Haig was apparently not getting alone with them.....
Suspicion about GH Bush was always out there after it turned out that he was in Dallas the night before the JFK assassination. When asked repeatedly where he was during the assassination the following day, Bush said he couldn’t remember (I was in grade school and remember every detail of that weekend). Years later, he admitted he was in the Dallas area but left right before the time of the assassination - he was in Tyler Texas at 1:30, an hour after it which would have meant that he had to drive 100 miles an hour to get there from Dallas. Oddly, GH Bush also called the FBI to tell them to check on a staffer of his who might have been involved but wasn’t. Very strange.
“”””Ill never forget watching Ronnie walk into the hospital leaning on the agents cracking a joke. What a guy! He was the real deal.””””
Reagan lived a life that at times proved his physical courage and that also at times proved his physical toughness and indifference to physical discomfort.
Nonsense, and silly, of course the Bushes knew where they were.
“Kiwanis former Vice President of the Kiwani’s club, Aubrey Irby, recalled the speech in an interview with a conspiracy author in a book:
“I remember it was a beautiful fall day,” recalled Aubrey Irby, the former Kiwanis vice president. “George had just started to give his speech when Smitty, the head bellhop, tapped me on the shoulder to say that President Kennedy had been shot. I gave the news to the president of the club, Wendell Cherry, and he leaned over to tell George that wires from Dallas confirmed President Kennedy had been assassinated.
“George stopped his speech and told the audience what had happened. ‘In view of the President’s death,’ he said, ‘I consider it inappropriate to continue with a political speech at this time. Thank you very much for your attention.’ Then he sat down.
Finally, George Bush’s wife, Barbara Bush, wrote down the events that unfolded in her memoir before and after the news that Kennedy was shot. She wasn’t at the club speech, but she was in Tyler, Texas that day and both of them boarded a plane to go to Dallas:
I am writing this at the Beauty Parlor, and the radio says that the President has been shot. Oh Texas — my Texas — my God — let’s hope it’s not true. I am sick at heart as we all are. Yes, the story is true and the Governor also. How hateful some people are.
