Nissan announces a slate of new models by 2026, over half of which will be EVs

Somehow, I’m not convinced that Nissan is in the most capable of hands. Here is the article from the NY Post that caught my attention:

Nissan reveals plans for 16 new electric vehicles by 2026 as EV demand revs up

Nissan laid out plans for 30 new vehicles by 2026 — 16 of which will be electric as demand for the battery-powered vehicles has revved up in recent months.

Nissan’s announcement, reported by Business Wire on Monday, noted “increased electrification” as part of the company’s new business strategy.

Introducing a slate of new vehicles, over half of which will be E.V.s, because demand has “revved up”? Where??

The NY Post item cites that a “record 317,000 EVs were sold” in 2023’s fourth quarter to justify Nissan’s gamble, but lets run through the rest of what we know about the market:

Ford’s E.V. division is hemorrhaging, and analysts expect the adoption of a new approach is imminent, because these losses are unsustainable. From an industry-specific outlet last month:

Ford’s EV division remains a loss-making business in 2023

Ford again recorded significant losses for its Model e electric car division in Q4/2023, amounting to around 1.6 billion dollars in the final quarter.

Ford Model e posted consistently high losses: in the fourth quarter, the loss of 1.6 billion dollars was just as high as sales. The loss was 1.3 and 1.1 billion dollars in the two previous quarters, respectively.

The EV division is thus deep in the red.

The Model E division thus lost an average of more than 47,000 dollars per vehicle in Q4/2023. The loss per EV rose from 32,350 dollars in Q2 to around 36,000 dollars in Q3.

Sorry to say it, but we live in a fascist system - where private industry works with government and its cronies to promote collectivist political schemes

16 new EVs. Awesome! But I’m disappointed that Nissan did not reveal any new cars powered by magic unicorns. Maybe that will come later.

It seems they think Biden will be re-elected, i.e. his plan to mandate that all vehicles be EVs by 2030.

Reading the linked AT article, and its linked Business Wire article, it says that the target market is not just the Americas but also the rest of the world (listing China, Japan, India, Europe, Middle East, Africa).

I have no clue what the EV market is like in the rest of the world. I hope they're not depending on selling many EV's here in the U.S. That market seems to be petering out.

In 2018 Nissan executives had their boss Carlos Ghosn arrested on fabricated charges to avoid a merger with Renault. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-58070929 He was able to flee Japan for Lebanon, where he now resides as a refugee. I would not even consider buying any Nissan product.

Women especially like Nissan. They make an attractive looking car but I do not trust the longevity or service record.

The following is not an environmental statement it is an economic prediction.

Something is changing in the electric vehicle market and that is the emergence of solid state batteries.

They are about to alleviate many of the problems associated with current EVs.

I’m just guessing that the next line of Tesla’s will end up utilizing solid State batteries and that will be a game changer.

That’s combined with the unfortunate pressure of governments forcing people and companies to purchase electric vehicles.

If you invest in stocks I suggest taking a look at the companies that are getting ready to mass produce solid state batteries.

I seldom hear anyone say that we don’t have the electrical infrastructure to handle recharging 100 million electric cars every day.

Nobody ever talks about that we are many years away from having such an electrical grid.

At some point ,there is going to be a collision between these plans for more and more electric cars, and the realities that we don’t have the electrical generation capacity for all these vehicles.

Nissa just has so many problems already, why would they add this insanity to the mix?

Their CVT Transmissions are junk... they have the longest lot times of any major manufacturer in the US... and they can’t move product, so much so they are desperately trying to get Dealers to buy their cars rather than be forced to put them into fleet.

Why, why, why, they would think heavy investment into Electric is going to be a good move is just beyond belief.

I really, really don’t understand how these people become CEO’s of these large organizations and are just so damned stupid.

GM, FORD, JEEP how any of these CEO’s have not been summarily fired for their incompetence is just beyond understanding.

Go ahead and be silly about sound economic observations that isn’t going to serve you very well but that’s your choice of course in a free market system.

The companies I am most familiar with are SLDP and QS.
Of course there is risk with any particular company, but less risk in the move to solid state batteries in general.

It’s very similar to what’s happened with computers, Cell phones, electric doors and many other applications.
Most electric door locks now use batteries that last several years.
