The small town of Ridgely, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, announced it was suspending officers of the Ridgely Police Department
...
A largely unexplained decision by a Maryland town to suspend its entire police force has left residents shocked, skeptical and on edge.
The small town of Ridgely, located on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, announced it was suspending officers of the Ridgely Police Department, leaving other public safety agencies to fill the void. But the town’s residents remain entirely in the dark about why it was being shut down.
"What’s very concerning is that they didn’t communicate with us in an honest and open way," said Laura Cline, a longtime Ridgely resident. "Treat us with respect. We’re adults — thinking, rational adults who deserve the truth."
Holly Justice, an esthetician who owns a spa in Ridgely, added: "We were blindsided. It makes you question the integrity of people who are supposed to protect and serve."
Last week, officials said on the Ridgely’s website that the town’s three-member commission had "suspended with pay the entirety of the Ridgely Police Department," and that the Office of State Prosecutor is investigating potential wrongdoing.
"It doesn’t add up," said Gennie Woo, a business owner in downtown Ridgely since 1983. "Everybody is skeptical about what happened. We just want to know how and why."

Do those sort of ratios work when you get this small?
That would surprise me.
Nope. The government sees you are near useless tools to be discarded when worn out, good only for the money that can be extorted from you through taxes.
“Six police officers in a town of 1600?”
About right. Two 12 hours shifts a day, two officers per shift, and two more to cover the days off of those four.
But that’s 7 days a wk and no time off.
If they’re being investigated by the state, the town might be better having them off the job until whatever it is is straightened out. Sounds serious.
Stupid reporter claiming local sheriff’s dept. is “nearby” when it’s the same county.
because trump will win in November and we want to be the first to usher in kaos
The town is so small and has very little crime so there really is no need for their own police dept. The policing will be taken over by the county sheriff’s dept. which will likely also recruit the laid off officers.
Hilarious. I'll be using it, a lot.
The vast majority of towns and small cities in Maryland do not have their own police. Some are covered by county police. The hood ones by county sheriff.
My county, who’s sheriff celebrated 250 years as a department this week only has three cities with police.
Better question is does a very small town with a population under 2000 really need a police force? Could their tax base support it?
The eastern shore isn’t Baltimore.

If I’m a resident of that town, I’m thinking “No police? Cool. It’s now open season on drug dealers, rapists and thieves.”
Did you read the article at all?
Clearly something pretty nasty has been alleged, and there must be some
Level of belief that at least some of what has been alledged is true for them
All to be suspended and the state prosecutors office is investigating.
Most likely not fully naming what the allegation is in case it is not true and not wanting to destroy the officers lives if it’s not.
Given those two assumptions, we aren’t talking about fixing tickets or skimming off the top.
Can’t say what it is, but it’s gotta be some seriously bad stuff.
I would say odds are something if a sexual nature, and if so I just pray it isn’t involving underage.

Have already contracted neighboring towns and state police to provide coverage.
Yep. The township in which I live has a population of over 90,000 but law enforcement is provided by the county sheriff’s dept.
But the response times will be slow enough to get rid of the evidence/bodies. If the police are even called. Think like a criminal, not a citizen.
Is the Mayor’s name Muhammad.??
But votes don't matter any more and the outcome of elections is predetermined. So, just as with unelected bureaucrats who have no fear of ever being fired or in any way held accountable no matter what they do and no matter how many people they hurt, voters can no longer hold politicians accountable for anything.
You are just crazy. Many small
Towns done have their own departments and pay others to provide coverage..
The silliness of people here is starting to cross over into the absurd
As a generality, what has formerly kept politicians in line and the way they are held accountable for their actions was the vote.
what is the rest of the sentence?
The 2nd is not about guns, it is about the people of like mind. Do we have enough, it starts with one.
