Manchin won't back Biden judicial nominees without at least one supportive Republican

West Virginia Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin on Wednesday indicated that he would not support President Joe Biden's judicial nominees if they could not secure the support of at least one upper chamber Republican.

"Just one Republican. That’s all I'm asking for. Give me something bipartisan. This is my own little filibuster. If they can't get one Republican, I vote for none. I've told [Democrats] that. I said, 'I'm sick and tired of it, I can't take it anymore," he said, according to Politico.

The moderate senator, who is retiring at the end of his current term, has long taken positions in defiance of his party, notably refusing to consider changes to the filibuster to permit federal action on a range of Democratic priorities, including to codify abortion rights after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. He further told the outlet that he was encouraging donors to ask candidates to commit to keeping the filibuster.

In the narrowly divided Senate, a single vote can often affect the outcome of a critical nomination. Manchin, however, remains adamant that cross-party support is a requirement for him. He specifically pointed to moderate GOP Sens. Lisa Murkowski, Alaska, and Susan Collins, Maine, as lawmakers from whom the Democrats could seek support.

I'm not sure the purpose of this statement unless Manchin has some political plans for the future. Lindsey Graham can always be counted upon to approve and vote for Biden's judicial nominees, no matter how poorly qualified for the bench.

Piece of cake. So many of the old boy network in the Senate would be chomping at the bit to be in the headlines.

Interesting...

Manchin got betrayed, they promised him things for his vote, then they never delivered.....

So this may be him having some revenge, or could just be setting the stage to create a fight that isn’t really a fight.

This could absolutely crimp their desire to replace Sotomayor before the elecition... or it could be play acting, to help add drama to get the democrat base engaged.

At this point, I think their strategy is to get Sotomayor to retire, and time the fight for her replacement to be as close to the election as possible.. to gin up the base over Abortion. The problem is right now, they control the Senate, so Republicans can’t stop them, so no real fight here if they want someone they can appoint them.

So, is Manchin actually “getting back” at the betrayal, or is he setting the stage so that they can have a fight where they can blame republicans and make November “Abortion” just like the last midterm?

If I had to lay odds, I bet Manchin does want to get back at being sold out, but he’s also spent a lifetime in the Democrat machine... so may be doing his one last dutiful duty for the party before he retires... with a big promise on the back end.

There have been A LOT of judicial nominees getting through with only Dem votes... Nominees so hard left that even those RINOs can’t stomach it.

The republican caucus has a lot of democrats pretending to be republicans. Munchkin will have no trouble finding a “republican”.

It has to do with his “supposed no labels” party. Bipartisan you know. He can’t pretend to be bipartisan and vote flat out for RAT policy now. He needs one of a plentiful amount of treacherous RINOs to make him look legit.

He knows he has got this.
