The unprecedented cry for help from a communist regime that has always prided itself on its social welfare model captures Cuba’s dire economic straits. Hurt by tightened U.S. restrictions, decaying domestic production, a weak post-COVID-19 tourism industry and indifference from its allies, the island is living through its worst economic days since the collapse of the Soviet Union more than three decades ago. A string of blackouts brought people into the streets last weekend, shouting for "food and power” — a rare display of social unrest since the turmoil that shook the island in July 2021, which the regime contained with crushing force.

A few years ago there were reports of how hundreds of old buildings collapse in Havana every year from poor upkeep. I speculated that a major collapse killing dozens of Cubans could be the spark leading to widespread social unrest, then the military turning and siding with the people when ordered to fire on them. Now it looks like simple hunger may be the spark leading to the same end. Soldiers with hungry families who are forced to choose sides, won't side with the plundering elite class that has run the country into the ground.

I know, I have been hearing the same bull crap for decades. Cuba’s problems are due to the United States’ embargo against them. What are they saying? A communist country can’t make it if it isn’t supported by a capitalist country? You think that Cuba would be grateful not to have to accept the filthy dollars created by capitalist exploitation of its workers.

It is a shame that this has to happen, as with the proper government Cuba could be turned into retirement paradise as many retiries are looking for a place in a warm climate. For an example take Cayman Islands amongst others..nice people, great food, great roads and hardly no crime, I know since I been there “Lucky me” quite a few times and with a little effort Cuba could have the same thing. But as with everything, leave it up to socialism it will kill the goose which lays the golden eggs and a good portion of people are too ignorant and stupid to see it.
