By a long shot, the enduring image of a NATO-standard modern main battle tank in the Russo-Ukraine War is a video of a stopped vehicle getting hammered by cheap FPV drones, before it gets set on fire and burns down to a six-million-dollar hulk.
Combat video posted by the 79th Air Assault Brigade on Tuesday, reportedly from the eastern Avdiivka sector, was typical, showing a stationary US-made M1A2 Abrams tank hit with a detonation in the back of the turret, probably by a Russian FPV drone.
Three crew hurl themselves from the main battle tank (MBT) as ammunition stored in a bin on the back of Abrams’ turret catches on fire. The vehicle appears to have taken minor damage. Shells inside the ammo bin start cooking off and the blaze spreads to the tank’s hull. Thirty seconds later the American fighting vehicle is burning fiercely and appears well on its way to becoming a total-write off. The fate of the fourth crewman isn’t clear.

Yesterday, I watched an 11 minute compilation of Russian armor beaten to smithereens by Ukie drones.
War breaks things.
Interested to learn why ammo was stored on the exterior of a tank.
The Marines are getting rid of tanks. You have to fight this war with infantry and drones.
Today is not your daddy's battlefield.
Why would you want to store high explosives inside your tank? I saw that video too.
I sure wouldn’t want my son sitting in any of those tanks.
Russian, British, German, Abrams tanks have ALL been getting plastered by drones. It appears that tanks, like aircraft carriers, are quickly becoming obsolete.
It may be that tanks have not worked well for either side.
The Russians are posting drone footage of like 3 or 4 M1s being popped.
While not totally accurate in the sense that we would not employ them the same way, this tank as all Western MBTs is obsolete and has been for awhile.
Cancelling FCS was a horrible mistake.
I agree.
The tech to build a missile, it’s penetration capabilities, thermals, dive/top attack capabilities, fire and forget, small backblast and signiture...
The evolution in armor defeating tech is easier and cheaper than to build a vehicle to protect you from these weapons.
We still need the capabilities of the MBT, but what that looks like will be different.
The ammo for an Abrams is stored in the rear of the turret, the bin, with a thick blast door between it and the crew. The rear of the turret has blowout panels designed to vent the blast to the outside and not inside the turret. That is probably what the big flare is. On T-72s it is onboard stored rounds in the hull that blows the turret off.
Also I do not think the NATO tanks in Ukraine are using the same secret squirrel armor th hat is installed on the country’s army t.anks
Aircraft carriers are not obsolete, they are still very useful ... one reason why the US maintains military dominance with capabilities no other country has
And unlike tanks, they can be surrounded by a fleet of other ships to be a “first line” of defense
“Cancelling FCS was a horrible mistake”.
What is/was FCS?
It’s NOT NATO’s fault that these tanks had to fight in sub-optimal conditions, it’s PUTIN’S FAULT - so blame him, don’t blame our woke DOD.
You say that now...but once the drones are countered with a counter measure that will disrupt their communication the heavies will run roughshod....
Future Combat Systems program
fiber optics wire-guided.
FCS was a horrible mistake.
