The Washington Post reported on Tuesday that Ukrainian first lady Olena Zelenska declined an invitation from the White House to attend President Joe Biden’s State of the Union (SOTU) address.
The alleged snub was somewhat unusual given the prestige of a choice SOTU seat and Ukraine’s fervent desire to remain in the good graces of the United States, the most pivotal supporter of Kyiv’s struggle against the Russian invasion. The White House reportedly offered to seat Zelenska next to U.S. first lady Jill Biden.
According to the Washington Post, Zelenska turned down the invitation because Yulia Navalnaya, widow of Russian dissident leader Alexei Navalny, was also invited to sit with Mrs. Biden during the speech.

Oh I’m sure Biden will have enough stage props up in the balcony for democrats to fawn over, probably someone from every racial background and sexual orientation on the entire spectrum, plus a few handicap folks for good measure.

Just goes to show, you can pay someone off for their silence but even that isn’t enough for them to kiss your butt..that is what happened here, Zelenskyy got the billions but its not enough its never enough

The state department has specialists on every region, and they should be consulted over matters of protocol. The typical American views Navalny as the opposite of Putin. That’s not true. He was very pro-Russian and said some things that could be considered to echo the Ukraine-is-really-Russian viewpoint. (Basically, he covered every possible angle during his career, and you could cherry pick almost any viewpoint.) The thing is this would be very bad optics for everyone concerned. The fact that the White House is tone deaf to the subject isn’t a surprise, though. But they really should have consulted State before issuing any invitations.
As for me, I find listening to anything Biden says painful. He reminds me of elderly relatives who had severe mental decline and it’s embarrassing that he’s the one representing America to the world. That’s before we even consider his long history of questionable public actions with women and children. (I’m also reminded of a photo of Biden sitting with several uniformed officers with his hand on the man’s thigh who was sitting next to him. You can see the man’s body language is saying, “If you weren’t the president I’d knock the hell out of you.”)
