A deal made by congressional leaders to avert a partial shutdown of the U.S. government includes an attempt to ease some veterans' access to gun ownership, even when they are deemed "mentally incompetent" to handle their own finances.
The $436 billion funding package agreed on by congressional lawmakers Wednesday extended the deadline for the expiration of funding for government agencies—including the military and Department of Veteran Affairs—from March 1 to March 8. It was the fourth extension painstakingly agreed on by a divided Congress during this fiscal year, but it spelled optimism that a deal for the long-term budget plan could be reached later this year.
Among the victories touted by Republicans in this deal is a bill that would eliminate the decades-old ban on gun ownership for veterans deemed unfit to possess a firearm—a measure gun-rights advocates have long protested.
Gun Owners of America, a nonprofit lobbying organization that promotes gun rights, wrote about the elimination of the ban on X, formerly Twitter.
"Congressional deal cuts funding to the ATF," the organization said, referring to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, "and eliminates a 20+ year old gun ban for veterans. It also temporarily reauthorizes the archaic Undetectable Firearms Act of 1988."

Mentally incompetent pedo-grandpa has access to nuclear trigger.
Ponder that!!
I remember that part in the 2nd prohibiting incompetents from getting guns....../S
The “Mentally Incompetent” already have access to the White House and our entire Dept. of Defense!!!!
That would stop almost all ‘mass shootings’ - assuming it could actually keep firearms out of demo-commie hands. Which, unfortunately, isn’t feasible.
“Having someone appointed to handle your finances does not mean you’ve been adjudicated as mentally incompetent.”
The whole rule was set up to disarm as many members as possible of one of the most politically-conservative groups of people in the country, and should have been ruled unconstititutional long ago.
Hell, they let them serve as president and vice president.
My youngest son has Asbergers. He is considered disabled.
Don’t ask him to balance a checkbook.
Despite this limitation, he can load, aim, and blow the eyes out of a target down range with no problem. His grouping is spot on!
Tell him to go for the red zone and it’s obliterated; AR, handgun, rifle, doesn’t matter. He is an excellent marksman and follows all the gun safety rules for proper handling.
For fun, he can hack your server in about 15 minutes. The first time he did this was in the 4th grade.
Don’t presume a label tells the truth about a person. He is smart in ways most people can’t imagine.
Not so much anymore. And, thank God. If/When the govt finally decides to forcibly come after our guns and gold, the last thing we need to deal with is a highly trained military.
veterans deemed unfit to possess a firearm. Making sure the experienced vet cannot be used when needed to protect this land from domestic enemies in control
We have a mental incompetent who has access to the nuclear arsenal.
The scariest thing about this is that we know who will make the determination of who’s competent and who isn’t. It wouldn’t be scientific; it would be political 100%.
Biden has access to Nuclear Weapons.
That doesn’t seem to bother Newswreak

Gun problems were solved in 1968. The democrats said so!
“Lawlessness and Chaos” was done away with by the Democrats back in 1968!
“Today we begin to disarm the criminal and the careless and the insane. All of our people who are deeply concerned in this country about law and order should hail this day.”-— Lyndon Johnson signing the 1968 gun control act into law.
And Thomas J. Dodd, who wrote the 1968 gun control act using the 1938 Nazi weapons law as a pattern...
“No one can predict how many lives will be spared because of this bill, but, if the bloody record of our yesterdays is any measure, millions of future Americans will live to enjoy the promise of many peaceful tomorrows.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to play a part in this great moment in our time.”— Thomas J. Dodd on passage of the 1968 Gun control act.
Once this travesty was signed into “law” instead of shutting off the lights and going home, they began to look for new targets to ban. Their gaze fell upon rifles, something they said they would never go after.
We all know who is responsible for most murders and shootings in the US.
Not when the fib is recruiting and supplying them.
A customer who is a veteran was denied a purchase because she had been deemed as having some mental illness by the VA. It was done without her knowledge. She had to fight with the VA to get the hold removed.
I’d always trust an armed veteran before I’d ever trust an armed person who can’t even figure out what’s in their own underpants.
‘Mentally Incompetent’ in this sense doesn’t at all mean what people think it means, and includes those who have sought help for PTSD, as well as those who have sought help keeping their bills in order.
I agree with most of your reply. What you fail to point out is sniper training in special forces since my time is awesome. A retired SF MSG. took me to a range at Fort Campbell, KY about 10 years ago. He was awesome. I always listened to SF NCO’s.
