Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said Wednesday that he will step down as Republican leader in the Senate in November.

McConnell, 82, revealed his plans in an address to the Senate, where he currently serves as minority leader.

McConnell, who is the longest-serving Senate caucus leader in history, plans to keep his seat in the chamber, which he took in 1985. His current term ends in January 2027.

His appointed replacement serves til the end of the term of whoever is replaced.

In some states, maybe all, the appointment lasts until a special election is able to be held to fill out the remainder of the term - the appointments seem to last only 2 years and the term is not up then an election is held to fill the remainder. That's why on rare occasions both Senate seats are sometimes on the ballot in the same election. Example - https://youtu.be/bOn7cAhw7xs?si=4cWV8S957LPWO0ya&t=143 "Twin killing in Tennessee" with two GOP wins - to fill the remainder of Gore's Senate term and the full 6 year term of he other Senate seat.

Any law against a Democrat switching to the Republican party beforehand?

WHY the Governor’s race in Kentucky was important. The Turtle would be replaced with a Schumer bot. Hope he hangs on till next election cycle. Prop him up like Ruth “BERNIE” Ginsburg.

He’s only stepping down from the leadership post. He’ll still be in the Senate, and whoever replaces him will likely be his own hand-picked sock puppet.

“Beshear has already stated that the KY constitution gives the Governor the power“

In other words like the rat that he is he will ignore the law as passed by the legislature.

Blocking Merrick Garland: “Mr. President, you will not make this appointment” was a big one...there were numerous 5-4 decisions in the next SCOTUS term that would have gone the other way on big issues but for Gorsuch being there and not Garland. Baiting the Senate Democrats to filibuster Gorsuch was another to allow the Senate to go nuclear...then they did not have the option in more tense political times later when Kavanaugh and Barrett were appointed and the nuclear option would have been more difficult to push through. And breaking records of judges being seated under Trump as well. The tax reform bill, repealing the individual mandate, congressional review acts to repeal Obama admin rules, etc. What I find interesting is that during the times of McConnell’s best moments where I noted they were his best moments - and I am presently attacked for those things I said back them - those presently attacking me are *themselves* present on these threads complementing McConnell during those times.

That’s exactly what he would do. And the Senate (under Schumer’s control) would vote to affirm that action and seat that appointee. I’m not sure what a court could do in that case.

Not in any way defending Beshear, but the competing theories of what the state constitution requires would certainly be tested in court. If the KY constitution really does delegate the power of selecting a replacement senator solely to the governor, well, that has to trump the act of a legislature. It's the only thing restraining the insane leftists in the blue states as it is.

Don’t know how credible the rumors were, but McConnell was apparently planning to leave the Senate years ago had Bevin been re-elected as governor - but Bevin could not keep his mouth shut and threw it away. Donors and the base did not open their wallets in last year’s governor’s race and Beshear had mountains of cash to overwhelm the Republican nominee and control the narrative from start to finish. He had a 60% approval rating, everything going for him, and won 53-47 - obviously winnable if we actually had made a full effort to compete - Beshear could run for governor of Massachusetts or California he is so far to the Left...but that was never exposed as the funds did not exist to both be on the offensive and defensive. He portrayed himself as mainstream in a well crafted marketing campaign and his opponent as an extremist who wanted women to be raped and have to carry the rapists’ baby.

My first thought is why couldn’t the Ky GOP come up with a candidate good enough to beat that rat Beshear in the firs place. My guess is we are looking at another stolen election.

I know they’re replacing him with someone worse.
But since he’s lane duck and stepping down, he’ll be worse anyway.
So what would the difference be.

“ So what would the difference be.”

Look at all the replacements. They’re worse. Either side. The corruption worsens.

Following that race last year from Texas, it looked early on that they did have a good candidate in the person of Daniel Cameron. But when the dust settled, the Democrat machine managed to raise three times the money that Cameron and the GOP were able to scratch up. Complete blowout. IIRC it was something like 25MM vs 7MM. The Rats clearly understood the importance of that governor’s mansion, and the GOP just couldn’t keep up.

Incredibly frustrating.

I’m very excited and optimistic.

Trump is the 6/5 fav to be next POTUS

Dems are very vulnerable in the Senate.

MAGA and/or GOP went 27-0 in House toss ups in 2020.

The endless doom loop is crazy IMO. Now seems the time to be excited and looking forward to the future.
