Mitch McConnell pulled a 'Machiavellian' move to swing Trump's impeachment trial in his favor
Yahoo! News ^ | January 21, 2020 | Eliza Relman, Sonam Sheth

Two weeks ago, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was in a bind.

Cracks were beginning to form in the ranks of Senate Republicans, and some moderate and vulnerable GOP senators were voicing their support for calling witnesses in Trump's impeachment trial — a measure McConnell and other allies of President Donald Trump were staunchly against.

Then John Bolton, Trump's former national security adviser, said he was prepared to testify. The announcement was McConnell's worst nightmare. A pivotal witness who was in the president's inner circle had stepped forward and offered to testify in Trump's trial. Could McConnell and Senate Republicans really afford to turn a blind eye?

The Kentucky Republican was stuck — until he wasn't.

This week, he announced in a resolution that the Senate would begin opening arguments on Wednesday in Trump's impeachment trial. If the Senate votes to hear from witnesses, it will depose them first and then vote on whether they should publicly testify.

The trial itself will be much more condensed than previous impeachment proceedings as well. If the Senate passes McConnell's resolution on Tuesday, each side will be given 24 hours to argue their case over three trial days. During former President Bill Clinton's trial, each side was allowed 24 hours of argument over four days.

Senators will then be given 16 hours for questioning.

There's a lie right there. Bolton was asked if he would testify and he said he would if compelled to do so. He didn't step forward. He's not champing at the bit to testify. If called to testify, the President would likely invoke executive privilege. But, the Democrats don't actually want him to testify because they are no more sure than we are what he would say. They want it to appear that he is the smoking gun and that the President and his team are suppressing his testimony because it would ice the case for the Dams.

He was never in a bind. The Democrats simply didn’t understand who they were dealing with.

Given that Bolton really hates Democrats, I think they have a pretty good idea. Calling on Bolton is just virtue-signaling on the Democrats’ part. They want to say they asked him to testify, but they don’t actually want him on the stand.

If I could wish one dead person would be alive today, it would be Saul Alinsky. Just for him to see how dangerously close we got to his demented vision for our country. A look at the likes of Pelosi, Schiff, Nadler, Booker, lundgren, Waters, Obama, etc. The MSM WHORES, the corrupted judges, Soros, education, the Milennials.

And when his grin cannot get any wider and his eyes start to tear with joy...

PRESIDENT DONALD J. TRUMP

The wailing and gnashing of Alinsky when realizing this ONE MAN stands between the death of our country and the beautiful spacious skies of our freedom.

And when he looks at TRUMP, I hope his last vision is PDJT praying. And thanking God for the GRACE He shed on America.

The authors of this piece are hysterics. Machiavellian would be having the House managers killed. This is just politics as usual - both sides get their say, and a verdict is rendered, based partly along party lines.

Oh how unfair! Unless you realize the Clinton impeachment had 4 counts and not just 2. Amazing how that little bit of information was left out, right?

Bolton said he would testify if subpoenaed in response to Biden saying he would refuse to testify if subpoenaed.

John Bolton did not say he would testify.

He said he was prepared to testify if The White House did not assert executive privilege or if a court order overturned the assertion

Neither will likely happen

Executive Privilege has already been asserted and, while the Supreme Court has determined that executive privilege cannot be used to conceal criminal behavior, every witness in the House impeachment hearings denied any existence of criminal conduct

My opinion of Bolton is that he is a fire-breather that would promote the bombing of every communist/terrorist in the world as the best diplomacy... A view I agree with...

He may be pissed at the President for being fired-for-reason, but to think he would say anything to support the communists in control of the House is, IMHO, a ludicrous stretch...

It is hard to believe that the demoncrats actually want him to testify... It's the dozens of other wing-nuts that it would open the door for testifying that the communist scum are angling for...

Everything the communists are doing is a delaying action (they have always known there was almost zero chance for a guilty verdict), for as long as possible, and hoping for some event or catastrophe to give them some sort of foothold going into the election...

Short version: The author is whining that the House has a lousy case that they didn’t do any due diligence on and McConnell outsmarted Schmuckey Choomer.

Boo hoo!
