Vladimir Putin rival and Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny dies in prison

Vladimir Putin's fierce rival and critic Alexei Navalny has died, according to the prison service.

The Russian opposition leader, who was the most prominent and persistent domestic foe of President Vladimir Putin, had been serving a 19-year sentence on an extremism conviction. He had been incarcerated in central Russia’s Vladimir region, 140 miles east of Moscow.

Navalny has been behind bars in Russia since January 2021, when he returned to Moscow after recuperating in Germany from nerve agent poisoning that he blamed on the Kremlin. Before his arrest, he campaigned against official corruption and organized major anti-Kremlin protests.

A vocal critic of Putin, he had rejected all charges against him as politically motivated.

Russia Records 20000 Political Detentions in 2022

Russia detained at least 20,467 people for political reasons in 2022, according to end-of-year statistics published last week by OVD-Info, one of Russia’s leading independent human rights watchdogs.

At least 19,478 of those were detained for speaking out against Russia’s invasion of neighboring Ukraine.

Navalny previously poisoned by a nerve agent, as has happened to others who get on Putin’s bad side.

Navalny was serving a combined 30 ½-year jail sentence when he died. He went missing in Russia's penal system in December, eventually turning up at a high-security penal colony in a remote town above the Arctic Circle.
