A similar event happened near me. The issue is the victims were people who were stuck amidst the thugs and couldn’t get out. Would their cars have been impounded too?

“Were they blocking traffic? Just asking because I don’t know.”

Yes. They block traffic. They block off entire intersections so traffic gets backed up on several directions. In the past, drivers have lost control and swerved into the crowd, passengers have fell out of or off of vehicles and been injured. I went down a rabbit hole of You Tube videos a few months ago and watched several of the incidents. These people need to be jailed.

Even the perps shouldn’t necessarily have their cars impounded.

There are only four reasons for law enforcement to impound a car:

1. The vehicle is not registered.

2. The vehicle is not insured.

3. The vehicle is involved in an incident and it can’t be moved by the driver (a serious crash, for example).

4. The driver isn’t physically able to drive it (a medical emergency or arrest).

That’s it. Anyone involved in these street races who doesn’t fit one of these categories should not have his car impounded.

And here on FR, we should always operate under a first assumption that the police are NOT doing the right thing.

Exactly right.

If we do not follow the rule of law, we become another thugocracy.

“Or does lawlessness abrogate the Rule of Law?”

Interesting question.

They post these exhibitions on TikTok, right?

So, TikTok is owned by the CCP
The CCP does not recognize private property
Their private property is therefore forfeit commensurate with their social media sponsor’s position on the matter.

Their insurance rates should go through the roof.

Insurance? In California? Who has insurance?

(s) nully, who has the distinction of being in an accident on the Pasadena Freeway with a Mexican woman who spoke English, had insurance, and paid for the damage with her own money!

A sheriff imposing his own fines and penalties and taking property without due process is an abuse of the system of justice.

One could argue that the cars are evidence, and must be held through the trial.

That’s why, when you are raising kids, one of your pet phrases should be, “I bet you are never going to do that again, huh?”

I don’t have a problem with having kids suffer the consequences of their actions when young. Usually what kids do will not have permanent consequences, so it’s ok if they suffer at their hands when it’s not serious.

You think about it the next time your car is seized and impounded as “evidence” after you are ticketed for a minor traffic violation like driving 3 MPH over the speed limit.

If a spectator lived there and was watching from his house, should the police seize his house? And possibly later destroy it?

See also “asset forfeiture”.

Ain’t right, but it is the law. Change is coming to fix that.

Participating in basically a riot isn’t going 3MPH over the limit, morn.

If they don’t have insurance keep the cars impounded until they do.

After what you've seen from so-called "law enforcement" in this country since 2016, are you so naive and foolish that you'd give them the discretion to honestly differentiate between a "riot" and a minor traffic offense?

If so, you might want to have a word with these folks:
