West Point defends race-based admissions as Supreme Court weighs emergency petition

Student group requested high court block race-based admissions at the academy amid ongoing legal battle..

West Point defended using race in its admissions process in response to a student group's request that the Supreme Court force the military academy to pause the practice while a lawsuit makes its way through lower courts.

"For more than forty years, our Nation’s military leaders have determined that a diverse Army officer corps is a national-security imperative," U.S. Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote in a Tuesday court filing. "Achieving that diversity requires limited consideration of race in selecting those who join the Army as cadets at the United States Military Academy at West Point."

In June, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) in its lawsuits against Harvard University and the University of North Carolina, finding that considering race during the college admissions process violated the Constitution’s equal protection clause. But the landmark ruling that effectively ended affirmative action did not apply to the nation's military academies.

SFFA filed lawsuits against West Point and the Naval Academy in September seeking to eliminate the exception, arguing the same Fifth Amendment protections also apply to military academies.

In an emergency application for an injunction pending appeal filed last week, SFFA argues West Point is not "exempt" from the Harvard ruling. The application claims two White West Point applicants the group is representing will suffer "irreparable harm" if an injunction is not granted because the academy will "illegally discriminate against thousands of applicants for the class of 2028—including two of 26 SFFA’s members—based on their skin color."

"Should these young Americans bear the burden of West Point’s unchecked racial discrimination?

What was called affirmative action was SOP for nearly fifty years at the service academies.

"For more than forty years, our Nation’s military leaders have determined that a diverse Army officer corps is a national-security imperative,"

What an incredible piece of horse manure!

Stating diversity as an unsustainable rhetorical imperative does not allow it to substitute for merit. Social engineering that amalgamates LGBTQ, White Privilege, feminism, and Critical Race theory into the service academies means that Cultural Marxism replaces national security as the primary objective thereby crippling our ability to fight.

In our family eight men volunteered for service over three generation, but never again.

They should start by giving service members a very attractive pay hike. Then they would attract more candidates of all races, sexes, etc who are of higher quality.

Take that $80 billion for Ukraine and give it to the troops instead.

It can’t be equal when you announce a quota. Our country is so screwed.

All officers should be only black people in the New Army. White people only good for cannon fodder.

Blacks are 13% of U.S. population. And:

“According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a sector of the U.S. Department of Education, 84 percent of Black students lack proficiency in mathematics and 85 percent of Black students lack proficiency in reading skills.”

Where are the competent black people going to come from to take all the jobs everyone seems to be trying to give them? That’s a rhetorical question. The math doesn’t work. Look at the blacks running private and government institutions; one can’t write her own doctoral dissertation, a Supreme Court Justice doesn’t know what a woman is, a district attorney hiring her married boyfriend as a special prosecutor, etc. etc. Imagine having to work for the women in post #8. I would bet everything I own there are a kabillion white males with better qualifications than every one of them who did not get an appointment to a service academy. We’re so screwed.

As a USAFA grad, I am frequently disgusted by what the institution has become. The things that slip out in the media regarding the service academies are barely the tip of the iceberg with the diversity nonsense that is going on there.

Yes sir, correct. My mom and her sisters were 7. They ALL married a service man during WW 2. My grandfather on my moms side fought in WW 1. The average number of children per family was 5 with males more than females. My dad had a brother who served, his sister had 4 boys, they all served. At one time in Vietnam there were 7 who served, 3 in country at the same time. I never served, but my two brothers did, and my dad served until he was 70. My granddaughter had pointed towards the Marines since Sophomore in HS. Another one was ROTC in Alabama, making rank within that. The granddaughters have foregone their service. They are paranoid about all of the queers and queer people, along with foreigners in service. My great great great... IDK how many greats, fought with George Washington, and one even fought Indian wars with Daniel Boone. TRADITION going back centuries washed away by DEI, and bad immigration.

Proud American/Colonists since the 1600’s, their sacrifices potentially pissed away.
