Oakland's largest employer reportedly tells workers to eat lunch inside

Oakland's largest employer has reportedly told workers that due to safety concerns in the city, taking breaks indoors is recommended.

Kaiser Permanente, which was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Oakland, has recommended employees "stay in their buildings for lunch and work, in response to street robberies of workers who went out to grab something to eat."

The memo also reportedly advised employees to avoid in-person meetings, if possible, and only recommended the Claremont Hotel in the Berkeley Hills for out-of-town guests.

Kaiser's news was met with consternation by local businesses, which are already struggling with lower foot traffic and crime. "I don't think you want to discourage people from walking around and kind of give in to the bad elements that are running around," one 19th and Franklin cafe owner told KTVU. "I think quite the opposite: I think that if there are more people on the streets, there will be less incidences."

According to the Oakland Police Department’s crime statistics, violent crime, which it defines as homicide, aggravated assault, rape or robbery, went up 23% from 2022 to 2023. Oakland police took 3,687 reports of robbery last year compared to 2,680 in 2022, and an astonishing 17,239 reports of burglary. That number has been steadily rising, from 10,584 in 2021 and 13,994 in 2022. Residential, vehicle and commercial burglaries are combined to find that number.

An armed society is a polite society. But we’re talking California here who has twice as many U-Hauls out than in.

Oakland is represented by the odious Barbara Lee. In 2022 she won reelection with 90.47% of the vote. Republicans would appear to be less than 10% of the electorate. So yes they’re out numbered, but presumably the Democrats are inconvenienced and endangered by crime to the same extent as Republicans so I say again if they don’t want the crime don’t vote Democrat.

Oakland has always had a reputation for being unsafe.

It looks like decades of liberal policies have only made it worse.

What a shame. Watching the deterioration of the state I grew up in is something like watching a loved one succumb to heroin addiction. There is nothing you can do until they admit they have a problem and seek help for it.

They don’t care about delivery boy safety.

(made up quote) We care about our employees' safety.

It's up to the restaurants to care about theirs.

Has there any been any pushback against In-N-Out Burger closing a location in Oakland which was in a high crime area?

I rather doubt it. The locals knew enough to avoid it, and the tourists don't know enough to know when it's missing.

We could use a Kaiser Permanente. Plenty of Nevadans available to replace the Oakland employees...

Years ago when Jerry Brown was MAYOR of Oakland, he was asked why he traveled with so much security. He said “because there’s a lot of crime here.” As worthless as a mayor as he was a governor, I guess.

Adjacent to the San Jose airport (not far from the East Bay, including Oakland) if you were to drive into the gas station across the street or the In-N-Out burger you’ll see numerous (as in every lane) signs advising you to lock your car if you get out of it and to not leave any valuables in sight.

I think that if there are more people on the streets, there will be less incidences.

I like to believe that butterflies turn into unicorns, too. If no one gets arrested, no one gets prosecuted, no one gets jailed except the poor bugger who tries to defend himself and his family, then you could have full streets everyday and you'd still have nothing but slaughterhouse ramps. This is your Fundamentally Transformed America, sport. You voted for it.

We act as if there’s no way to solve criminal activity; that there’s nothing the police or property owners could do. Nothing a functioning criminal justice system could do.

We’re supposed just accept that this big mystery means we just have to accept becoming a third world country.

Yeah, eat your lunch in the high security area while the ferals run wild. That’s the solution, sure…

Dang. These are like the warnings we used to get on bases in Iraq during high-activity periods, pretty much telling us to limit outdoor movement.

Democrats have turned parts of the U.S. into 2006 Baghdad.

All that gets you is broken back windows to make it easier for the thieves to reach in, flip down the back seats, and steal whatever valuables were moved to the trunk to be out of sight.

I've seen where people park, leave all the windows open, and the hatchback up, to show thieves there's nothing inside. Cheaper than replacing broken windows.

Agreed.

If you absolutely HAVE to go to Cali, consider drive throughs and rental vehicles.

Oakland has always been a third world country. Many years ago, helped a friend move back to TX after being there 6 months. Packed what the Mustang’s trunk would hold and left the rest.

For Sacramento, I’m thinking a MUCH bigger difference:

Oakland, CA to Reno, NV
$670-$1410

Reno, NV to Oakland, CA
$129-$199

Actual price depends on truck size, but 7x more for their largest truck to leave CA.

I’m concerned that the white House would not have the ample shelf space needed for his face & hair products.

I traveled to San Francisco for work in the early ‘70s.

Other than Jack London Square restaurants on rare occasion, we stayed out of Oakland as suggested by our hosts.
