Oakland's largest employer reportedly tells workers to eat lunch inside

Oakland's largest employer has reportedly told workers that due to safety concerns in the city, taking breaks indoors is recommended.

Kaiser Permanente, which was founded in 1945 and is headquartered in Oakland, has recommended employees "stay in their buildings for lunch and work, in response to street robberies of workers who went out to grab something to eat."

The memo also reportedly advised employees to avoid in-person meetings, if possible, and only recommended the Claremont Hotel in the Berkeley Hills for out-of-town guests.

Kaiser's news was met with consternation by local businesses, which are already struggling with lower foot traffic and crime. "I don't think you want to discourage people from walking around and kind of give in to the bad elements that are running around," one 19th and Franklin cafe owner told KTVU. "I think quite the opposite: I think that if there are more people on the streets, there will be less incidences."

According to the Oakland Police Department’s crime statistics, violent crime, which it defines as homicide, aggravated assault, rape or robbery, went up 23% from 2022 to 2023. Oakland police took 3,687 reports of robbery last year compared to 2,680 in 2022, and an astonishing 17,239 reports of burglary. That number has been steadily rising, from 10,584 in 2021 and 13,994 in 2022. Residential, vehicle and commercial burglaries are combined to find that number.

“and only recommended the Claremont Hotel in the Berkeley Hills for out-of-town guests. “

In much of the Third World, hotels intended for foreigners are walled-off in compounds, much like US Embassies in countries that are sick of having to deal with us flying the Gay Flag and demanding Gay Marriage.

I suppose Kaiser should be given some credit for recognizing the problem. But better that they should leave the city altogether. It’s only going to get worse.

Okay, if they’ve got copies of the memos and the company States they said that, how can the headline and the story say that they reportedly said it? What is with reportedly? That’s like it’s casting doubt that they actually said it?

More crap writing masquerading as reporting

Why this suggestion? They work in a hospital and can get “fixed-up” if they are assaulted. They are taking money from the criminal class! Bigots!

It will continue to get worse as long as the inhabitants continue to vote Democrat.

The Clarmont Hotel is a rather grand looking building and a goid place to spend a couple of nights, but it’s not that large, and is known to be expensive.
The hotel has a place of distinction, on the top a grassy hill. Many of their parking lots are built on a slant, so the driver will be setting their emergency brake before leaving their car.

Nearby restaurants don’t like this.

Kaiser says order in.

They don’t care about delivery boy safety.

Remember how Eric Adams in New York and maybe some other City Mayors wanted office workers to come back to the office, because office workers go out to lunch and support other local businesses.

I wonder if this is considered racist, to tell office workers that they work in such a bad neighborhood they should not be out of the office on coffee breaks or lunch hours.

Has there any been any pushback against In-N-Out Burger closing a location in Oakland which was in a high crime area?

Meanwhile across the bay. Someone has had to call for tow trucks 99 times after cars block his driveway during the last 7 months.

I use to walk to work about 25 years ago on occasion to my campus job. The bum problem got so bad I just drove to work and walked around campus to get my morning exercise. The students weren't up yet, so I had to run the gauntlet of bums. Going to lunch wasn't an issue because of the safety of crowds...

Sorry, but I am snickering at this. I've been in a very different Oakland long ago, and across decades spoken to many about the successive drop in quality of life, complete with the "keep voting the way you're voting and...."

Too many Californians still cannot think that their votes for Democrats at the local, county and state levels has brought them this. My empathy for some remains, but for many Californians -- meh.

Can’t they just ‘car pool’ using an ambulance?

It will likely cause the robbers to enter the hospital for victims if they won’t come out.
