WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Navy is starting to enlist individuals who didn't graduate from high school or get a GED, marking the second time in about a year that the service has opened the door to lower-performing recruits as it struggles to meet enlistment goals.

Maybe if they lowered recruitment age to middle school...

...ditto.....there were a small number of E-3s and E-2s in my “A” school who had fun afoul of the law in some fashion or the other and were given the choice by a judge to join the Navy or go to jail.....if I recall they were not good sailors and BMCd (Bitched, Moaned and Complained...) through most of their hitch....

Graduation standards from boot camp, then the technical schools post-boot-camp will also have to be lowered. Heck, why not just do away with all of them, kind of like the public schools? Then the Navy can “look like America.”

“””””There were a few on my ship who had a choice: jail or Navy.”””””

Or so they said.

When a good young man got into trouble for being too wild the judge might steer him into the military, but that was for being wild, it was not after fighting for and winning a conviction for whatever minor offense it was, it was a trick by the grown-ups.

“During the Vietnam war they took anyone and anybody. Why not now? Oh yeah. We lost.”

No, we did not. The liberals of the country convinced politicians to abandon the Vietnamese. The politicians ran the war and refused to allow military leaders to do as they knew to do.

The military is dragging their feet enlisting whites so they can claim whites are not enlisting so they need illegal aliens who will follow unlawful orders to attack Americans.

We all believed the Kennedy statement of “ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.”

Today anyone with JFK's political and social views is not welcome in the democrat party.

And if the democrats could get their hands on him they would lock him up in the Jan-6 Gulag.

Or worse.

I joined the Army in 1972 as a High School Dropout. Got my GED in Basic, the Drill Sgts hated this program and took it out on the few of us enrolled. I would have quit had it been an option.

I retired at 37 as an E8, selected to attend the USASMA (Sergeants Major Academy) the first step to make E9.

Mkst kids today don’t have the same kind of patriotism instilled in them as all of us did.

Then "most kids today" are a heck of lot smarter than all of you were. Fighting, and potentially dying, for the benefit of the Military-Industrial Complex, and for a political elite who actually despises you, is a fool's errand.

"Patriotism," as you seem to envision it, is rancid idolatry.

You are one of those who would be shocked to learn how radically left and destructive against America JFK was in politics and in office.

People believe the most incredible fantasies about him.

Do you suppose that since we no longer see any positive, patriotic advertisements and news about our military, and much negative publicity plus all the Wounded Warrior stories and the like pla,ys a big role in recruitment??

The Navy gave my son hell when he was trying to enlist. Admittedly, he had a lot of trouble when he was under 18. He got involved in drugs

The Air Force rejected my son because, although he nailed the ASVAB, he is nearsighted and had acne at the time.

1970 I enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard with no H.S. diploma. Received my G.E.D. through correspondence courses through USAFI. Lots of young men with promise were once allowed to enlist depending on their scores. I left the Coast Guard with an E5 rating Radioman after four years and entered college and received my BS in Finance/Economics in 3 1/2 years.

The Coast Guard is one of the best things that ever happened to me. I was proud to serve my country.

It has nothing to do with intelligence. I did well in high school and simply chose to develop my country.

I was not motivated by the military complex. Yes, I know full well that there are a lot of people getting rich off of wars we shouldn’t get involved in. That’s a completely different story.

My issue is about patriotism, and I take offense that anyone would even imply that I was an idiot that let the politicians make me do it, or that I wasn’t intelligent enough to make up my own mind about what I wanted to do for my country.

I agree 100%. Both parties were much more conservative back then.

I am not saying the democrats were conservative. They were just way more moderately conservative then than they are now.

Kennedy wouldn’t have even been elected as a Massachusetts Senator these days.

I don’t allow anyone without a GED or high school to work at my plant. To dangerous. Yet the Navy is going to let them on multibillion dollar ships? Good luck

And haven't we been hearing about an AWFUL LOT of recent U.S. military ship, helicopter and plane accidents lately? Wonder why...

Lots of local Filipinos joined the Navy when they had a program recruiting here. So this has been done in the past.

Air Force is more picky. Even the Marines are, they will only accept a couple hundred a year with GED’s. My son got his GED after studying for 2 weeks and he aced the ASVAB too.
Became a journeyman laborer extremely quickly and had companies begging to get him to work for them. Problem is they are always on project work. Gone for 4-6 weeks at a time, back for 2-3. You make a lot of money, but no home life. He met a lot of guys that were on their 4th wife, kids with all the previous ones, or were single at 50. He didn’t want that life. It’s tough.
