HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The newest class of weight loss drugs is being called the “Breakthrough of the year.”
That’s because their benefits go beyond weight loss itself, according to the health publication, “Science.”
The added health benefits and positive results led Dr. Hayley DeGraaff of Advanced Life Clinic in Huntsville to say these drugs actually live up to the hype and could help fight Alabama’s obesity crisis.
Alabama has the third highest adult obesity rate in the country.
The class of weight loss drugs described as the “Breakthrough of the Year,” by “Science,” are glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1 drugs; think Ozempic and Wegovy.
They were originally made to lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. Researchers later found out the drugs can lead to significant weight loss, with mostly manageable side effects.

Cholesterol isn’t bad. Optimum total cholesterol range for total longevity is 200-260.

“Will they remove all those taxes on sugary drinks ?”
You bring up money. Ozympic is around 900/month or 10,000/year if your insurance doesn’t help with the cost.
How many people might end up using it. Say 10 million.
The total bill would be 108 billion. Are the skinny people going to help pay for this?
I'm one of those "humans".
The unknown side effects of the injectable med is, IMO, worth risking vs the known effects that being overweight was causing. This conclusion was reached under the advisement of a 30+ year RN I keep on hand (SO).
Started with Keto to get things rolling and now easing back into something of a more "normal", but still carb conscience diet. Down 40#s and still going.
A lot of people have things they should "just stop" doing but won't.
A lot of people on the net live idyllic lives but they're extremely elusive in realtime.
Careful with those rocks.
The education system failed us all. The ‘food pyramid’ was upside down. Carbs and sugar with little exercise is dangerous. People are addicted to them...easier to take a pill. The lack of educating people is deliberate.
At least in most other countries you walk a tremendous amount. Here things are so spread out we just drive everywhere. Carbs, sugar, sit. Rinse repeat - no wonder this is happening.
The issue I addressed was removing a tax.
Not my problem. I've been on a low-carb diet since 1974. And thanks to that and exercise, I keep my weight down (160lbs), have low BP and the rest.
On the occasions when I have gone off keto, my weight jumped up, my BP and cholesterol skyrocketed.
In so far as enjoying the low carb diet the answer is NO. I prefer pancakes and biscuits for breakfast and pizza and pasta and beer for dinner. But that doesn't work.
So you can keep your rocks. My diet isn't any fun and I don't like the way it tastes, but it keeps me healthly.
Keto is the only thing that lowered my husband’s cholesterol after years of low fat diets and medication. It took a good year for it to come down, but it has stayed at optimal levels now for nearly 6 years. He is practically a carnivore with a few veggies thrown in.
He had high cholesterol even when he was a skinny high school kid.
All his other blood work is perfect as well. His doc was skeptical at first but now tells him to keep doing what he’s doing.
Our brains need cholesterol!
What many people don’t realize is that your body makes the cholesterol you don’t eat.
There is more to heart disease etc, than just cholesterol numbers alone.
For mr. mm, we do more meats and low carb veggies and measuring out and limiting the pasta and eating it last.
That way, he doesn’t fill up on carbs and it’s easier to avoid overeating carbs when you are partially sated.
“Our brains need cholesterol!”
We need to send a bucket of it to the White House!
It’s bullsh¡t. Diabetics who need these drugs cannot get them thanks to all of these lazy a§holes. My boss just had to tell a diabetic that our supplier can’t get their meds becuase doctors are prescribing these without guardrails or incentives to chanhe behavior and diet.
