‘A light at the end of the tunnel’: Alabama doctor explains new weight loss drugs could curb state’s obesity crisis

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - The newest class of weight loss drugs is being called the “Breakthrough of the year.”

That’s because their benefits go beyond weight loss itself, according to the health publication, “Science.”

The added health benefits and positive results led Dr. Hayley DeGraaff of Advanced Life Clinic in Huntsville to say these drugs actually live up to the hype and could help fight Alabama’s obesity crisis.

Alabama has the third highest adult obesity rate in the country.

The class of weight loss drugs described as the “Breakthrough of the Year,” by “Science,” are glucagon-like peptide-1 or GLP-1 drugs; think Ozempic and Wegovy.

They were originally made to lower blood sugar in people with diabetes. Researchers later found out the drugs can lead to significant weight loss, with mostly manageable side effects.

I’ll believe it if it works on Chris Christie and Stacey Abrams.

Alabama should ban forks. That’ll fix the problem!

Low-carb diets like keto work, not only for weight loss but also to control cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar.

Why people would rather take pills with unknown side effects is a mystery (well, not really...humans are pigs).

Well, after the “safe and effective” vaccines, the first thing I thought was what a brilliant way to depopulate the unhealthy member of society that will cost the system a lot of money. Another drug taken for their own good that winds up killing many. Yes, I’m jaded.

And the light at the end of the tunnel might be the actual light at the end of the tunnel.

Eating well and getting plenty of exercise would go a long way.

It’s only been recently that the obesity epidemic has exploded, especially after the FDA’s new food pyramid that pushes carbs so heavily.

There is no magic pill that allows the gluttons to continue eating the same volume of food and still loose weight.
A friend once tried to start a weight loss company. You stay onsite and only eat what is served. Guaranteed to loose weight.
I think his naming it Death Camp Diet marked it for failure.

No. These drugs are nothing more than profit vehicles with guaranteed negative health effects if patients don’t address the actual cause(s) of their obesity..

“Hope in one hand and…”

Keto spiked my cholesterol levels like nothing before or since. I couldn’t believe what 3 months of it did to my bloodwork.

The only way I can see a drug decreasing weight is if it curbs your appetite or increases your metabolism. Either way I would want to see 10 years of test results before I would trust it.

Cutting back on processed foods, big agra, and corn syrup would help.

If the feds taxed it and made regulations on the amounts of sugars (of all kinds but fructose esp,) in what people put in their mouths, American health would recover to some extent immediately, and continue to improve...oh, health care costs would be trillions less each year. Yes, we regulate cigs, seat belts...

From what I’ve read, they cause one to lose as much muscle as fat. And the benefit ends when you stop taking the drug.

Keto and fasting can give the same results without the muscle loss, for life, for free - but then, one needs to control how one eats!
