Two-state solution would mean relocating 200,000 settlers, says Israeli lawyer who has David Cameron’s ear

Lawyer who has advised foreign secretary says Israel has the capacity, but not the will, to relocate even one settler

Nearly 200,000 of the 700,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank would have to be relocated to Israel to create a viable Palestinian state, according to an Israeli lawyer from whom the UK foreign secretary, Lord Cameron, has sought advice on his visits to Israel.

Cameron has said he realises reaching a two-state solution would be tough, but he has not spelled out the practical consequences in terms of borders, including the need to persuade so many Israelis to relocate.

Cameron acknowledged his debt to Daniel Seidemann in giving evidence to a Lords select committee last week, saying he always seeks his advice when he visits Jerusalem.

In an interview with the Guardian, Seidemann said: “If Israel has the will, or capacity, to relocate 200,000 settlers from the West Bank and Jerusalem, a two-state solution is a viable option. If it does not have the will, the two-state solution is dead. The number might be better than most people think, but it is quite daunting.

Look at a map of the original U.N. Palestine partition plan from 1947. It’s easy to see how neither side would be happy with that highly irregular configuration of two separate jurisdictions.

NO STATE solution. Israel should take Gaza and the West Bank back and F’ the unwanted Arabs who identify as Palestinian.

I’d have to dig into the proposal deeper but the allusion to Jerusalem here is troublesome. It seems that they are seeking to divide the city. That’s not going to happen voluntarily. It wasn’t a good idea in Berlin and it’s not a good idea now.

Instead of moving 200,000 Jews, swap some land, irrigate it and connect it to utilities, and build new housing for 200,000 Arabs. Then, the only people who are moving are Arabs who are getting upgraded, new housing (or who are politically connected and grease the right PLO palms). Set the border. Problem solved.

The Palestinians have been a perpetual problem, but that doesn’t mean they have to be so forever. They have always suffered from bad leadership and even worse choices.

A Palestinian state that is demilitarized, that can engage in at least “cordial” if not friendly relations with Israel, is the best hope the Palestinians can get. There is no other partner the Palestinians can benefit from or trade with to prosperity. Every other country around them is piss poor or dysfunctional. Ironic, but Israel is the Palestinians’ best hope. They just have to get beyond the myths, recognize their own errors, and look to the future. Israel is as rich per capita as just about every European country; Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq and the Palestinian self-rule areas can’t help them much. And the days of just sending them cash unaccounted for have to come to an end. UNWRA has to come to an end. Lebanon has to absorb the Palestinians living there as full citizens just like Jordan and Israel did.

This map was likewise unlikely to have much appeal among the Palestinian Arabs.

It's understandable that Israel would want to hold on to land for security reasons.

It's also understandable that the boundaries drawn would not find much support among Palestinians

I think the “security” angle of Israel’s demands has become less and less relevant in an age of: (1) drone and rocket effectiveness over longer distances, and (2) the large-scale movement of Palestinians into Israel on a daily basis for work.

Why in the hell is England chiming in on this? Do they know the empire is over?
And what kind of idiot wants a two state solution? That would leave Bethlehem and many other hold land sites in the hands of the terrorists.

They don’t deserve a state and should be occupied non-voting territories forever.
Also, what is with this “give them a state” mentality. They did that about 15 years ago and forced out all the Israelis. It was called “Gaza”.

Not only do they not need a two state, no moslem should have voting rights in Israel.

And yeah, lets make the West Bank a nation. That way you can have a salient into Israel. That way they can narrow Israel into an 8 mile wide strip and bring the entire country into the range of dune coon rocketry.

The two state solution worked for the Dakota Territory in 1889. I don’t know if it has worked well in any other cases.

Even if the Palestinians did agree, they’d still fire rockets into Israel and commit other acts of terrorism.

I like the one poster a while back that wanted to load everyone in Gaza on ships an disembark them in Lebanon.
Good idea.
As for the rest of the Palestinians make a deal with Jordan, Syria, and Iraq to take them in. It is where “artificially’ created Palestinian people came from originally anyway.
