The difference between our slums and theirs is that our homeless are eligible for food stamps and social security disability benefits which allows them to buy drugs and live in a tent. Of course those benefits may not be for long after we go bankrupt.

Actually, that statement is far from untrue. The concept of American slums is a growing truth but the Mumbai part is an infinity away from the truth.
The slums have developed along Mumbai right aways of railroads and the large water and sewer pipes. Of interest to me especially is the way the dwellings have been adapted on top of the miles and miles huge pipes. I couldn't find a picture but there are videos.
I will suggest that as a matter of interest and education that some of the Mumbai slum videos be watched. There are tons of them
