That Time Archie Bunker Endorsed Ted Kennedy

Archie Bunker, the slur-spewing outer-borough dad on the CBS sitcom All in the Family, was probably the most famous character to be created by Norman Lear, the TV writer/producer who died this week at age 101. People remember Archie as a reactionary, but did you know he backed that liberal lion Ted Kennedy for president?

OK, so strictly speaking that's actor Carroll O'Connor, not the character he played on the show. But the folks who shot that spot during the 1980 Democratic primaries did everything they could to suggest this was Archie Bunker speaking to voters. If you doubt that, look at the clapperboard at the start of the video—it says "Green Archie A," not "Green Carroll A."

Norman Lear was a genius. A liberal who had no problem skewering hypocrites regardless of their leanings, political or social, at either extreme.

Archie: “Hey, Edith, what channel is Cronkite on?”

Edith: “Channel 2, Archie. The one we don’t watch, ‘cause you always say Walter Cronkite is a Communist.”

Several seconds of laughter

Archie: “I never said that, Edith, the man ain’t all red.”

Lear was a destructive lefty and Carroll O’Connor must have regretted that ad when Ronald Reagan won.

That 30-second ad is devastating to Jimmy Carter.

Yes, conservatives are often played by liberals in liberal entertainment media.

I think it was an episode from ‘77 in which Archie said something to the effect of “Laugh it up, Meathead. Come 1980, Ree-gan is gonna be President.”

All in the Family was a nasty, mean spirited show. The cardboard caricature of Archie Bunker poisoned the mentality of its viewers. It gave them an archetype to project upon the supporters of Ronald Reagan and even out to Donald Trump.

“ not the character he played on the show”

Archie would never endorse that fat crazy libtard drunk Ted Kennedy

Yeah, but Norman Lear didn’t exactly invent the character. I believe the show was purchased from the BBC which had a similar show in the UK about a curmudgeonly British father who spoke openly about racial stereotypes etc. Lear refashioned it for US audiences. That said, he was extremely talented in that endeavor, his many other shows and characters, and of course the writing.

“...maybe most importantly—backs a candidate who never had a shot at the Archie Bunker vote.”

Archie Bunker only existed when O’Conner was on the All in the Family set and the camera was on.

You are right. The show was called “Til Death Do Us Part”.

Teddy Kennedy was such an embarrassment to America and the Kennedys.

Drunken sot. IQ around 80. Manslaughter and coverup.

The other Kennedy brothers had deep flaws. But they were not a humiliating embarrassment.

“Till Death do Us Part”, IIRC a BBC production that I’ve never seen.

My family always thought that “All in the Family” was loosely based on “Bless this House”), the a Thames production that was aired in the UK by ITV.

I think the talented left wing Norman Lear poisoned the well when he depicted the middle class Archie Bunker family as white bigots. That stereotype exists in politics today.
Obama mocked his white Grandmother suggesting she was a bigot. Obama mocked whites as “clinging to their guns and religion.”
The Democrat party, who counted Norman Lear as a big donor, divides people by race and religion. Unfortunately this policy divides our country instead of uniting our country.
It is sad so many Democrats believe they are superior beings due to their financial success.
Of course they put their pants on one leg at a time just like everyone else.

Yes it is.

Sky high inflation, a terrible foreign policy, bad for America's future, and it would only get worse with another Carter term.

"Archie" could be talking about Biden.
