The mayor of Westbrook says he will not run for another term and, in fact, will never run for public office again.

Michael Foley, who was just elected last year, tells Maine's Total Coverage he has been harassed, including receiving threatening emails and phone calls related to a recent holiday lights controversy.

Earlier this month, the city removed a Star of David from its Riverwalk light display and replaced it with a dreidel.

The star is a historic religious symbol in Judaism. Foley says it was removed based on legal requirements that prevent government entities from appearing to endorse a religion.

Foley declined to be interviewed about this issue and did not provide more details about the nature of the threats he received.

Foley still has two years remaining in his term as mayor.

Personally I have always thought that

star of David and/or menorah equal Nativity Creche.

Dreidel equals Christmas tree

Norse Paganism gave us the Christmas Tree (as well as other Christmas traditions).

Odin became Santa Claus.

This article is (intentionally?) unclear on who is harassing the mayor. Is it people who are mad that the star was removed or people who are mad it was originally included? Or a mixture of each?

I’ll guess door number three, both.

I think both.

Interestingly enough the municipality next door to this town just erected a multistory menorah on city hall.

This municipality is a freak show of non Christmas decorations the most vivid has been a deciduous tree dripping blood drops and oddly shaped and colored lit objects looking like alien devices. People in the area leave for Christmas season to shop at traditionally decorated towns.

"it was removed based on legal requirements that prevent government entities from appearing to endorse a religion."

If Satanists wanted to display The Sigil of Baphomet, I would complain. I don't think the government needs to display religious symbols in the public square.

I agree.

If there is no nativity there should be no menorah or star.

"If there is no nativity there should be no menorah or star."

Two slaves celebrating the shackles that their godless, leftist masters put them in and wanting others to join them.

A dreidel is a child’s toy. Star of David or a Menorah is an appropriate display of respect for the historic religion.

Citing legal requirements is pure BS. If that was the case any Christmas decoration would violate whatever law he thinks exist.

I don’t support at all the display of The Sigil of Baphomet, but this is so much bullsqueeze.

This country was created on a basis of Judeo-Christian thought and mores.

Have we forgotten all that b/c of “legal requirements?”

That’s the issue you face as a local government official if you put up overt religious displays in public places. The satanists will show up and demand equal space in those public spaces. Best to just avoid the issue.

I think the only decorations should reflect the religion of the majority of the Founding Fathers, i.e., Christian. It’s what made America wonderful and strong. If people want to celebrate their holidays, they should visit their respective fatherlands during those times of the year. If the Nativity scene offends them .. GO HOME AND BE HAPPY. No need to infect us with all of that.

The saying, “Diversity is our strength”, is a load of crap. Every act that inched us into more diversity has weakened America — diluted its good-ness. The country has become a freak show in so many ways.

We need to get back to our Christian roots if we want to survive.
