TEL AVIV, Israel — Israeli officials obtained Hamas’ battle plan for the Oct. 7 terrorist attack more than a year before it happened, documents, emails and interviews show. But Israeli military and intelligence officials dismissed the plan as aspirational, considering it too difficult for Hamas to carry out.
The approximately 40-page document, which Israeli authorities code-named “Jericho Wall,” outlined, point by point, exactly the kind of devastating invasion that led to the deaths of about 1,200 people.
The translated document, which was reviewed by The New York Times, did not set a date for the attack, but described a methodical assault designed to overwhelm the fortifications around the Gaza Strip, take over Israeli cities and storm key military bases, including a division headquarters.
Hamas followed the blueprint with shocking precision. The document called for a barrage of rockets at the outset of the attack, drones to knock out the security cameras and automated machine guns along the border, and gunmen to pour into Israel en masse in paragliders, on motorcycles and on foot — all of which happened Oct. 7.
The plan also included details about the location and size of Israeli military forces, communication hubs and other sensitive information, raising questions about how Hamas gathered its intelligence and whether there were leaks inside the Israeli security establishment.
The document circulated widely among Israeli military and intelligence leaders, but experts determined that an attack of that scale and ambition was beyond Hamas’ capabilities, according to documents and officials. It is unclear whether Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu or other top political leaders saw the document, as well.

Yup.
*SPIT*
Same thing bit us on 9/11, underestimating the enemy always wrecks you.
Hmmm...who believes the left-wing hamas loving NY Times?
I don’t.
I think Israel became overconfident and Hamas took advantage of that.
You may know of a plan
You may know of ill intent
You may know of bad wishes
But until someone does someone; all you have is a thought crime
“ raising questions about how Hamas gathered its intelligence and whether there were leaks inside the Israeli security establishment.”
Maybe it was the 20,000 or so Hamas “day workers” Obama demanded the Israelis take in every month. They couldn’t possibly have been spies.
FU NYT.
L
Intelligence heads had the write up of the plan from two different observers who were brushed off. They had reports from the border observers that Hamas were practicing raids and testing border strength, many reports from the young women soldiers who staff the posts, the ones who were killed and captured when Hamas broke through.
The heads were told it would be on a holiday with reduced forces. Aspirational? Play-acting for the young wannabe jihadis? No way.
Israel isn’t stupid. Their intelligence is most profoundly not stupid nor in denial. Their upper intelligence echelons wanted this to happen. 1200 Israelis, ten times as many Palestinians so far - thousands of eggs into a grand omelet. To what end?
Germans didn't think the Russians could built a better tank than what they had...the T-34 was a wake up.
Only quibble I have with Israel is why Gaza doesn’t cease to exist yet.
One thing about losing...it'll make you rethink what you're doing.
Ah... someone is spinning crap for anti-Bibi political advantage I see.
Anyway, so what? The idea that Hamas is going to attack is a constant for Israel. Hindsight is awesome. But I seriously doubt the truth is as presented.
The truth is that a huge element of the intel community and military just a few months ago was supporting the judicial reform street riots and protests. They and all those protesters bear as much responsibility as anyone. THEY prevented Bibi from being able to move to protect the nation and would have instantly used such moves against him.
In short, this story is pure, USDA Prime, 100% gold plated leftard bullshit.
Did they find out if they used the equipment we left in Afghanistan?
Note that “more than a year ago” would have been when Benny Gantz was Defense Minister, infamous Aharon Haliva was Military Intelligence Director, and PM would have been Naftali Bennett and/or Yair Lapid.
There is a huge upheaval coming to all kinds of senior officials in Israel.
“Their upper intelligence echelons wanted this to happen.”
Utterly childish slander.
Previous FR thread stated that Israel had about 10k daily Gaza residence workers.
Easy to see that they would report to Hamas what they observed inside Israel.
It seems like most times when the US has a mass shooting event, the FBI will just shrug and say, “We had that guy on our radar ...”
Does the NYT find that interesting? Or do they just want to bash the Jews?
