SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Hundreds of stray cats that roam a historic seaside tourist area of Puerto Rico’s capital where they are considered both a delight and a nuisance will be removed over the coming year, under a plan unveiled Tuesday by the U.S. National Park Service.
The agency said it will contract an animal welfare organization to remove the 200 cats estimated to live on 75 acres surrounding a fortress at the San Juan National Historic Site that the federal agency operates in Old San Juan. If the organization fails to remove the cats within six months, the park service said it would hire a removal agency.
Cat lovers responded to the plan with dismay, but the agency noted that the felines can transmit illnesses to humans. “All visitors will benefit from the removal of a potential disease vector from the park,” the park service plan stated.
The six-month timetable to remove the cats is unrealistic, said Ana María Salicrup, secretary of the board of directors for the nonprofit group Save a Gato, which currently helps care for the cats and which hopes to be chosen to implement the plan.

Must allow the rats to take over ….. Typical message from our so-called betters

Wild cats be eating something
Just sayin
Many people, acting from emotion, feed feral felines, to the detriment of birds and everyone else.
Feral cats kill many times their number in birds every year, often torturing the birds for amusement before killing the birds.
Spay and neuter.
To be fair, cats “play” with their prey to weaken and exhaust them. This minimizes the risk of injury to the cat from the prey defending itself.
Cats gonna cat.
Aim and shoot.
FJB and his Department of the Interior hate cats
rats and mice are the disease vectors
Skinner: Well, I was wrong. The lizards are a godsend.
Lisa: But isn't that a bit short-sighted? What happens when we're overrun by lizards?
Skinner: No problem. We simply release wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes. They'll wipe out the lizards.
Lisa: But aren't the snakes even worse?
Skinner: Yes, but we're prepared for that. We've lined up a fabulous type of gorilla that thrives on snake meat.
Lisa: But then we're stuck with gorillas!
Skinner: No, that's the beautiful part. When wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.
Is President Xi coming for a visit?
They must have decided it’s time for the plague…
One of the reasons for the spread of the rat-flea-borne Black Death was that there was a very crazy Pope at the time who hated cats and launched a campaign against them throughout Europe. There simply weren’t enough cats left to keep down the rat population in the port areas.
And don’t forget the famous cats of St Petersburg, airdropped in by the British to take down the huge rat population that was spreading disease after the siege.
That is probably true. After the cats are removed, there will probably be another expensive program to control the rats.
I’ve had cats that ‘played’ with copperhead and won.
Give them the Covid vaccine.
You are correct, they will never admit their mistake and replace the cats. It will be for something “better”. It’s funny, they say the cats cause a problem that the cats prevent.
Interesting keyword: kittyping. I’m going to have to remember that one.
