HONG KONG—An unusual cluster of cancer cases among Chinese researchers affiliated with one of the country’s top oncology laboratories has attracted a wave of public attention, leading to new questions around lab safety.

Two surgeons at Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hospital in the southern city of Guangzhou were diagnosed with cancer in June and October this year, the hospital said Wednesday. Both had previously worked in the hospital’s highly regarded breast-cancer research laboratory.

A visiting scholar who worked at the lab until April of last year was also diagnosed with cancer at some point this year, the hospital said

The alarming thing about this story is that research group tried to cover up the story until one of the researchers who developed cancer publicized her diagnosis along with her research collogues, on social media. And after her story went viral, the hospital instead of opening an investigation, physically condemned the laboratory and demolished it, destroying all evidence.

Which is leading to speculation that the lab was actually secretly conducting bio weapons research and developing substances that could rapidly cause cancer.

>> speculation that the lab was actually secretly conducting bio weapons research and developing substances that could rapidly cause cancer.

That was the first thing that came to my mind as I read the article.

Chilling... I sure wouldn’t put it past ‘em to do such a thing.

Widely known that many cancers are borne by viruses.

Hey DINGBAT, over HERE.

What are you going to suggest? Hong Kong duck at a nearby restaurant suddenly transmitting cancer?

I don't see how two people at a place of employment having different cancers can possibly be called a “cluster.”

This is a nothingburger.

I’ve always wondered if certain types of cancer were not simply contagious. I know the common thinking is that you can’t catch cancer from somebody but is that really true?

Their place of employment is not the hospital, but a very exclusive group of researchers working supposedly in a cancer research lab. The entire group was 5-6 people, and half of them suddenly develop cancer, and the lab tried to cover up the story which forced her to go to social media, and the lab they worked at was almost immediately destroyed right after her story caused a stir.

None of this is the least bit suspicious to you? I would have taken your response if the hospital didn’t immediately act as those they are trying to hide something.

I have heard that there is the theory that cancer can be caused by a virus and can be contagious. It had to do with a couple strange clusters of a rare form of cancer that happened several years ago.

I wish I could remember more, but what I do recall reading from the article was the concern of what would happen if it became public knowledge that cancer was contagious.

You absolutely can get cancer from a virus.

Studies involving the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which at first had the researchers excoriated, showed that HPV leads to cervical cancer.

If you can find something that rapidly causes cancer, you would think that they would be looking for something that cures cancer instead. But that would be the thinking of a rational government, not the totalitarians of China.

Governments are at their heart coercive entities and are always searching/supporting methods to control or destroy threats to themselves. So it was upon the formation of the first government entity thousands of years ago, and so it is today.

I was thinking the same thing. Nothing. But now I’m pondering, Why this story. WHY now. There is something rotten in China and “our” government , NGOs and corporations are involved. There is NO way a medical researcher in government should or could be worth Millions of dollars. Something or someone is hiding info
