Six weeks after the start of the war in Gaza, the UN security council has come together to back a resolution calling for “urgent extended humanitarian pauses for [a] sufficient number of days to allow aid access” to the embattled territory.
The vote late on Wednesday overcame an impasse which saw four unsuccessful attempts to adopt a resolution.
Malta drafted the resolution, which calls for humanitarian corridors across the Gaza Strip and urges the release of all hostages held by Hamas.
The US and the UK, two potentially veto-wielding powers, abstained on the resolution on the grounds that although they supported the emphasis on humanitarian relief, they could not give their full support because it contained no explicit criticism of Hamas. Russia also abstained on the grounds that it made no mention of an immediate ceasefire, its top imperative.
The resolution was passed with 12 votes in favour, and is the first UN resolution on the Israel-Palestine conflict since 2016.
The Israeli foreign ministry said it rejected the resolution, prompting the Palestinian representative, Riyad Mansour, to ask the UN security council members what they intended to do in the face of that defiance.

Good.
If someone attacks and then a ceasefire is imposed when the other side begins coming after them, allowing their fighters to escape, resupply or reposition themselves, that only benefits the side which attacked.
The UN becomes the bad mother behind which a misbehaving child hides.
Without any conditions on Hamas (just the request to hand the hostages over), turning off the Israeli offensive at this time would essentially amount to giving Hamas a reprieve at the expense to Israel who has no benefit in this agreement.
Israel should piss on that UN proposal.
It’s a toothless resolution. Means nothing.
It was rejected out of hand, which is the correct course of action.
No pause. No surrender. No quarter. Seal the tunnels. Bury the savages alive.
The United Nations should change its name to The United Communists.
There was one. The rag heads ended it on October 7. Thank you get to run up somebody and punch them and then as they are beating you down, you say time out? Nope…
Dear u.n.

Israel should only pause to reload.
Did I miss the UN condemning Hammas for the cowardly attack, tape and muderer of innocent Jews?
The UN still exists ?? News to me. /sarc
There cannot be any ceasefire until the Fakestinian terrorists are rooted out and eliminated.
Otherwise, they just rearm and redeploy and increase their raids and bombings
And since the IDF is being as careful as possible to minimize “civilian” harms, this is going to be quite a while so... sit back and relax
I wouldn’t care if the U.N. invited Zelensky to give a piano concert using his male equipment (there’s a video of him doing that) to strike the keys. NO. NO. NO. Israel’s very existence depends on wiping out Hamas root and branch, and that would be jeopardized by granting a ceasefire—so they could rearm and regroup. U.S. outta the U.N. U.N. outta the U.S.
Don’t worry, the IDF will finish the job
they are going carefully to minimize “civilian” harms but they ARE making progress at eliminating the terrorists and their weapon stashes
it will get done (and the UnitedNazis can stick their collective heads in the broken toilets at the bus depot)
“… prompting the Palestinian representative, Riyad Mansour, to ask the UN security council members what they intended to do in the face of that defiance.”
They will issue a strongly-worded letter.
Too bad they didn’t call for a pause in Hamas’ hate on Oct. 7.
UN... Useless Numnuts
The UN should be targeted by Israel.
Ignore it Israel, They do not have your best interests at heart. Finish the job.
The US used to veto such nonsense.
Saving HAMAS from the mean old Joos 101
The only pause should be to escort out all hostages. Until then, hunt down and kill every HAMAS that can be found.
