Pharmacies were once abundant in the South Side of Chicago. Now, residents living in the majority Black neighborhood often find themselves with few options when it’s time to get a prescription refilled or stock up on cold medicine.
Ladell Johnson, a longtime resident of the South Side, drives half an hour from her house to the downtown area every time she needs to pick up her prescription. “Luckily, this pharmacy is close to where I work, but my house is half an hour away by car or one hour by bus,” she said. “If I didn’t have a car, I would have to walk 20 blocks one way to my closest pharmacy.”
As pharmacies shutter stores across the U.S., people in low-income and predominantly Black, Latino, and Indigenous neighborhoods are increasingly left in pharmacy deserts, without easy access to medications and other essentials. In November 2021, CVS announced that it would be closing 300 stores a year across the country in the next three years, and Rite Aid, which filed for bankruptcy in October, plans to close at least 150 stores in the next several months.
“Pharmacy deserts have been a longstanding issue that has gotten worse with recent closures of both independent and chain pharmacies,” said Dima Qato, an associate professor at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy, who studies disparities in geographic access to pharmacies and spent more than a decade working as a community pharmacist in Chicago. That lack of access can have major consequences for the health of people living in marginalized communities.

Hope they are not looking for sympathy...
I checked my “give a damn” meter, nope, didn’t move.
It is their lack of respect. It is their lifestyle that puts everyone at risk. The drug stores are just a result of their behavior.
The answer is not figuring out ways you can function while being a prisoner in your house.
Pretty soon some version of Directive 10-289 will forbid companies to close locations that are losing money if “the community needs” the stores to stay open. Costs to be borne by some combination of increased prices and tax-funded subsidies.
So whites are okay?
White supremacy on display (the only thing not shoplifted) I’m sure! That’s the only reason the pharmacies are closing. It couldn’t possibly anything else.
If the left thinks that pharmacy “deserts” are harming black and brown people the most, then wouldn’t they insist that the behavior that causes those store closures be stopped? Forthwith?
Maybe the truth is they really don’t care as much about the people as they pretend. That segment of constituents are only needed for their voting ballot and as an excuse for more committees and agencies that need lots and lots of taxpayer dollars. No problem ever solved with the money continuing to flow is the goal!
No. Thugs and thieves are putting Black and Latino residents at risk by their thuggery and thievery creating pharma and food deserts.
“How pharmacy deserts are putting the health of Black and Latino Americans at risk”
Let me correct the headline:
How Blacks & Latinos have put pharmacies at risk, creating healthcare deserts.
The drug stores closed because black and hispanic thugs stole all the inventory. You reap what you sow.
You gonna shoplift without the slightest bit of shame, then complain that the pharmacy or grocery is going to close, because of YOU? They don’t exist to supply you with free stuff, you clueless remorseless TURD. Go straight to Gehennom—do not stop at Go nor collect $200.
I’m glad I never gave in to taking drugs, vaxxes because of bad reactions to those things from childhood, but for those people who have a legitimate need and live in these big city high theft hellholes, I’m sure this isn’t fun. However, if the people who live in areas of high store theft can’t get the thieves under control so the stores want to stay open-then I guess they’d better learn how to get their scrips by mail-order online from Walmart, Amazon, etc-so easy even a dumbass can do it. All they need to do is make sure they are there when the stuff is delivered so the mailbox/porch pirates don’t get some free drugs to sell in the hood...
So do I here in southwest Florida. Plenty of law enforcement presence here, too. After Hurricane Ian and many days of no power there were cop cars in very plain view parked in front of businesses ... just in case the dindus got any ideas.
Cause, effect. The urban zones get more of it.
I witnessed shoplifting in progress at a couple of local Walgreens stores. The first one has since closed. The second one, a few miles away, is still open.
At the second one, I saw a guy come in, then later heard shouts from two of the store managers, "Get out! Get out!" They said he was taking things and had to leave. He complained that "I'm just here to get my medications" Managers "You were already here" Guy "You're just a bunch of racists" and the store managers laughed at each other and shouted at him until he left.
It’s not as if there are pharmacies in the primitive wild Congo jungle.
Same thing here. /spit
I love a Pecan Sandie cookie after a meal of Camel Stew.
Another attempt to shift the blame from the culture of thievery to retailers. Excuses excuses excuses. liberals are poison and a clear and present danger to survival.
