Delta Air Lines is backing one of its flight attendants, who is accused of discrimination for failing to make allergy accommodations for a traveler on a flight from New York City to San Diego.
When a California family asked that no almonds be served on the Oct. 2022 flight due to a teenager’s allergy, the flight attendant denied the request, according to a complaint filed to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT).
Deborah Gianulis and her mother, Deena Gianulis, filed the complaint in Oct. 2023 on behalf of Deborah Gianulis’ teenage son, identified only as K.C.
As the complaint states, the family requested they have the opportunity to wipe down K.C.’s seating, that Delta make an announcement alerting passengers that someone with a nut allergy was on board, and that Delta refrain from serving almonds during the flight.

Exactly. I carry almond/peanuts/cashews as snacks when I fly.

WHAT???? Are you trying to kill some snowflake’s poor little child?
You beast!
Point well made. It reminds me of morons who think a paper mask will prevent covid cooties.
The one time I flew during the pandemic I had a two pound bag of Costco salted peanuts and ate them VERY SLOWLY during the entire flight. If you were eating, you didn’t have to wear your mask. 🤣😂
Don’t fly then, drive. Or book a private flight. You don’t get to incovenience everybody. Sheesh.
There’s too much co-mingling of references to nuts and peanuts in this article. Almonds are seeds and peanuts are legumes. It should not necessarily be inferred than an allergy to one means allergy to both.
That stated, given that nuts can be one of the few snacks available on some flights, it’s unreasonable to deny the entire passenger manifest an insignificant treat that they paid a lot of money for.
If the child’s safety is imperiled to this extent by daily living, it’s up to the child’s parent to do what’s within their means to assured its safety. That doesn’t include changing normal behaviors of everybody else in the world. Most of us are compassionate and understanding of special challenges, but there are limits. And I think it’s unreasonable to expect an airline to change prevailing policy in extreme circumstances like this.
Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you are one.
I have a son who has a deadly peanut allergy.
When he was a toddler I gave him peanut butter on several occasions. He would scream in pain. I had never heard of peanut allergies, so I assumed he would eventually love the taste. 👅
We learned what was going on when he collapsed unable to breathe. I’ve had to rush him to the emergency room a couple of times from ingesting nuts that were not supposed to be in his food: at church someone tossed some peanuts in the group’s ice cream. He swooped it within tasting it.
When he was a young boy I would intentionally give him food with nuts in it. If he tried to eat it I would stop him. I was training him to read the ingredients himself, no matter who assured him the food was free of nuts. He shouldn’t trust anyone, even me, because it’s not as critical to anyone else as it is to him.
It’s not a nut allergy. It’s a Control issue
“I’m guessing that 90% of these nut allergies in children are because of a mom who is nuts to begin with. Made up for attention. Like tranny moms.”
My wife’s granddaughter has a severe nut allergy. It is very real.
—”The tyranny of the outliers.”
Only the officially recognized outliers affecting officially recognized groups.
And as usual, some are more worthy than others.
IIRC there have been a few fatal events.

Girl nearly died on flight after man ‘ignored requests’ to stop eating nuts

Why is it so prevalent now?
I remember getting peanut butter sandwiches in grade school lunches. Was that just a secret Darwinian effort to kill off those suffering from the allergy? I don’t remember a single person suffering from it when I was a kid.
The kid is unfit to be in public and should stay at home...... always
Being unfit to be in public is applied inequality. The kid is simply unequal and mortally endangered by plain living
Don't f**king eat them.
He’s a real moop!
I guess the question is what steps are taken when your son flies?
ENOUGH!!!!!
These allergy people expect the world to stop spinning because of their allergies.
Well, if I don’t have the allergies, I don’t have to accommodate you, or your allergies.
If I know about them, I will not intentionally serve you what you are allergic to, but to demand that everyone around or near you not partake is assinine.
Just like switching seats on an airplane to accommodate last minute planners....
Your lack of planning doesn’t constitute an emergency on my part.
This goes for schools too...
Why should every student be denied a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because one kid is allergic?
Another victim group that is trying to exert its new-found power over normal people.
Enough with the certified victim groups!
My SiL has a severe nut allergy. He doesn’t eat them and carries an Epi pen in case he accidentally eats something with nuts. Problem solved.
But oh no, if I can’t eat them no one else should be allowed to eat them!
They demand the airlines follow their request, no matter how much it inconveniences the airline or other passengers.
My daughter is allergic to all tree nuts - to the point of hospitalization when exposed (at times accidentally). We ALWAYS carry epi-pens and Benadryl - and fly everywhere. Has never been a problem with nuts, and she’s never had a reaction on a plane.
Did anyone have a peanut allergy until 25-30 years ago? A peanut butter and jelly sandwich was de rigueur for everyone I knew in the 40s and 50s.
