Taiwan finds hope in Ukraine's remarkable resistance
National Post [Canada] ^ | Nov. 6, 2023 | Adam Zivo

Commentators often draw parallels between Taiwan and Ukraine, as both countries are western-aligned democracies facing asymmetrical threats from hostile (and nuclear-armed) superpowers. Just as Russia believes that it is entitled to Ukrainian land, so, too, does China believe that it has the right to annex Taiwan.

Russia expected to easily subjugate Ukraine, but failed to do so... this outcome is far better than most had expected at the beginning of the invasion — which has inspired the Taiwanese.

“We learned that it’s not impossible to defend our country when facing one of the largest military forces in the world,” said Connie Chang ...

It’s somewhat irrelevant that Ukraine has been unable to expel Russia — simply drawing out the war should be enough to make Beijing think twice about getting into a similar quagmire. “China wants to make sure that this stays a short war, as the longer it lasts, the less likely there will be a victory,” said Taiwanese Deputy Foreign Minister Roy Chun Lee.

The Taiwanese have also noted how the Ukrainian military has destroyed Russian hardware by relying on smaller, highly mobile weapons that can’t be easily tracked and blown up. A classic example of this has been the American-made HIMARS rocket systems that Ukraine has used, with devastating success, to blast Russian tanks and ammunition depots.

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu later confirmed that Taiwan is focusing on an “asymmetric strategy” that will rely on small, decentralized and mobile units that, as seen in Ukraine, are “very capable of keeping a large military at bay.” ...

Taiwanese officials and non-governmental players often stressed that Ukraine’s perseverance underlined the importance of international support and western solidarity. “It’s very easy for Taiwan to feel that it’s hopeless if we’re by ourselves. And it’s the same in Ukraine,” ...

It is still you who does not get it.

We have nukes aimed at Russia. They, like us, do not consider that friendly. Both, the US and Russia, know that if those nukes are used on one or the other, that both countries will be destroyed.

Good heavens you are lame. Nukes are not the only reason for the animosity between the US and Russia.

>>Then all industry will be coming back

Shifting industry to Asia took decades. Any war over Taiwan would be over well before any significant shifting of industry was completed.

The pro tariff anti-globalist sentiment will be swift as it is long over due. Also in a hot war Free Traitors™ will be openly hunted down like vermin they are.

Being an island, Taiwan can only be supplied in bulk by sea. Surface ships, including warships, have never been more vulnerable. And what kind of civilian frieghter is going to risk running a Chinese blockade?

Ukraine, on the other hand, is the size of Texas and has land borders on its western side far, far away from the ground combat in the east, over which military supplies can easily be shipped. So in terms of allied military support, that is quite an important difference.

Also, yes Ukraine survives at least for now. But any talk of this success should also mention the enormous cost paid by Ukraine in loss of life, injuries, infrastructure, economics… to end up in even the current position where the future remains quite bleak for them. So I really do not imagine the average Taiwanese wants to end up like that. Anyway, I think the idea of a Normandy-style invasion is fanciful. I expect the approach to be much more clever than that.

You miss the point

China is incapable of the blockade you suggest.

Rather, China is in danger of being blockaded by the various navies currently on patrol

If China is blockaded, most of the economies of Southeast Asia will collapse. Why would they go along with that?

I believe Ukraine was “free” before Russia crossed the border.

There were people in Ukraine who were not free in the Donbass because Ukraine was warring against those people because of their ethnic heritage of being Russian and speaking Russian.

Zelensky lied when he was elected because he said he would end that. He did not and it is obvious that he was a puppet leader for foreign interests in Ukraine. The very ones you mentioned in your post.

This codswallop that the Ukes are fighting for their freedom is just that codswallop.

None of this had to happen and US taxpayers should never have had to fund what was a losing venture from the start.

McConnell revealed it to the world. Dead Ukes are worth it to revitalize the MIC in the US and weakening Russia is the excuse.

I hope that someday soon what is left of the Ukes rise up against that coke head little toad running the place and throw him into the meat grinder.

Because the war in Ukraine is showing how effective Western air defenses are against drones and hypersonic missiles?

Because 5th generation Chinese fighters can engage targets without leaving Mainland Chinese territory?

To be brutally fair…Ukraine has a lot more “strategic depth” ( including resupply from Poland and Romania) than does Taiwan.

US “ experts” have already admitted we plan to destroy Taiwanese critical assets ourselves rather than let China occupy them.

It’s not even Russia’s nukes, they are left over from the USSR

This is unfortunately not a correct portrayal of current circumstances. It is the US that said we were going to draw down to zero nuclear weapons and began this in 1992. Russia and China have been going through aggressive nuclear modernization programs with a broad diversity of new capabilities. It is the US that is enmeshed in its own 30 outdated bureaucratic tangle. And this started with GHWB and everyone subsequent who thought that the American conventional superiority that conquered the middle east and saved the day for democracy in Ukraine was making nukes obsolete.

We have a lot of nukes, but they are aging out and we are struggling to figure out how to modernize and even when capabilities we actually need in the present international environment.

No comparison, except for a fool.

Uk TWOT’s believed the “we will defend you” twaddle from the West when they gave up the USSR nukes left there.

Taiwan is not that stupid. Do they have nukes? REally? You doubt? They could have easily bought a dozen on so on the market.

Just tell the CCP directly: “We have them on ships parked in your ports. One bomb or one boot on Taiwan and the ports cease to exist.” “your move.”

Sure. Rounding up tens of thousands of conscripts and forcing them to their deaths on the frontline is quite remarkable.

you Russians have lots of experience with “rounding up tens of thousands of conscripts and forcing them to their deaths on the frontline”

Russia has already had 103,000 troops killed in “Putin’s Blunder”

and he wants to doom even more with another mobilization next year!
