Washington state senator Jeff Wilson is arrested in Hong Kong for carrying a GUN while on a five-week vacation with his wife: Faces 14 years in jail under brutal Chinese regime but claims it was just an 'honest mistake'

A Washington state senator was arrested at Hong Kong Airport and faces up to 14 years in jail after discovering mid-flight he had brought his gun with him on the plane.

Longview Republican Jeff Wilson was flying with his wife Trisha to the Chinese city at the start of a five-week vacation in South-East Asia when he realized his mistake.

Reaching into his hand luggage for a 'piece of gum' he discovered the firearm in there as well which had also escaped the attention of security staff when he set off from Portland in Oregon.

'It was an honest mistake, and I expect the situation to be resolved shortly,' he wrote on his website.

But he was arrested on arrival in the repressive former colony, thrown into jail and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The senator, who was elected in 2020, denied reports that the weapon was discovered during a search on arrival, insisting he 'immediately went to customs officials and called their attention to the issue', at the end of the 15-hour flight.

He said the revolver was unloaded and is registered in Washington, where he holds a concealed carry license.

But he faces up to 14 years in one of Hong Kong's 'correctional facilities' and a fine of $12,800 for arriving with a firearm not registered in the Chinese territory.

Private ownership of guns is outlawed by the Chinese Communist Party in the tightly governed territory.

The city's Commissioner of Police only grants them to police officers, armed security guard services and operators of exclusive shooting range clubs.

Wilson has been a strong pro-gun advocate in his native state and sponsored a law this summer which made it easier for Washington's museums to obtain historic firearms without the need for background checks.

Back in the good old days, Oregon’s legislature met every other year. I would assume that most State legislators have real lives. What’s wrong with taking a vacation? 5 days, 5 weeks...five months, if they can afford it. With assistants and a phone, they can get things done, in the unlikely event that anything needs doing.

Looks more like a tax write-off for a vacation

“I have zero sympathy or liking for the CCP, but you go to another country, you abide by their laws. This guy is not very smart.”

He also violated US laws.

I usually don’t take five week vacations to China with one day notice.

That's because you're a 'peasant' and they are 'special.'

This is the kind of irresponsible firearm owner who leaves his firearm unsecured.

Thank goodness the CCP s TSA found it rather than a child.

Dude, that jumbo jet has a trashcan in the lavatory.

The poor guy trusted the CCP drones to use common sense.

I'd wait to drop it in a terminal trashcan. If it's found on the plane there's a passenger list. In the terminal they'd have to pull in thousands of people. If you wiped your prints off it'd be tough to link it to you.

Also, It'd be less likely to even be discovered.

There are cameras in the terminal.

There may not be cameras in the lavatory.

Dump it in the lavatory trash, get off the plane, go through customs, don’t sweat like a pig, and get on the next flight to the States.

Not on a 5 week vacation unless it is a bereavement flight - certainly not 5 weeks, a week or 10 days at the most.

...the revolver...is registered in Washington...

You'd think a state legislator would have a better clue about state law. There is no registration in Washington state...yet.

It’s easier to forget about your pistol in your bag than you think. Happens very often.

No Excuse IMO.

If you own or are in possession/use of a Firearm or multiple Firearms you need to know where and what CONDITION IT/THEY ARE IN. NO EXCEPTIONS !!!

Long Guns (Shotguns and Rifles) are slightly different CONDITIONS from Handguns. Shotguns are way more likely to be used for Home Defense than a Rifle but are not exclusive to Home Defense.

This applies to All Firearms: Pistol or Long Gun it doesn't matter. As the owner or possessor of a Firearm it's Your Responsibility.

I include any Firearms that are in any state of function IE: At the Gunsmith's or in the Home that are being built/repaired or under modification. The Firearm Owner is responsible for maintaining a mental list of any and all Firearms that are currently owned or possessed.

The same applies to Ammunition/Magazines/Speed Loaders as well.

If one has so many Firearms that they can't remember the status of them mentally then keep a list somewhere.

Again this My Opinion.

I had a security clearance revocation client, Eagle Scout, unblemished record, forget his .38 was in his backpack going through TSA at the San Antonio airport. Got arrested, lost his clearance (I got it back for him), truly just for not checking his backpack before he left the house.

Serial number...

Yep, that's true, but it would take a long time to trace. Could be from any country. By then I'd be back in the US.
