A Washington state senator was arrested at Hong Kong Airport and faces up to 14 years in jail after discovering mid-flight he had brought his gun with him on the plane.
Longview Republican Jeff Wilson was flying with his wife Trisha to the Chinese city at the start of a five-week vacation in South-East Asia when he realized his mistake.
Reaching into his hand luggage for a 'piece of gum' he discovered the firearm in there as well which had also escaped the attention of security staff when he set off from Portland in Oregon.
'It was an honest mistake, and I expect the situation to be resolved shortly,' he wrote on his website.
But he was arrested on arrival in the repressive former colony, thrown into jail and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The senator, who was elected in 2020, denied reports that the weapon was discovered during a search on arrival, insisting he 'immediately went to customs officials and called their attention to the issue', at the end of the 15-hour flight.
He said the revolver was unloaded and is registered in Washington, where he holds a concealed carry license.
But he faces up to 14 years in one of Hong Kong's 'correctional facilities' and a fine of $12,800 for arriving with a firearm not registered in the Chinese territory.
Private ownership of guns is outlawed by the Chinese Communist Party in the tightly governed territory.
The city's Commissioner of Police only grants them to police officers, armed security guard services and operators of exclusive shooting range clubs.
Wilson has been a strong pro-gun advocate in his native state and sponsored a law this summer which made it easier for Washington's museums to obtain historic firearms without the need for background checks.

Sounds like this guy was doing Biden’s bidding.
Corrupt Rino was going to meet Chicoms.
“Wilson, a port commissioner in Longview, had planned to meet with counterparts at the port of Shanghai, in addition to traveling to Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia. He said he hoped to resume his itinerary when the case is resolved.”

5 week vacation?
Better, an open ended vacation. Can he run in the next election while out of the country on his extended vacation??
Corrupt Rino was going to meet with Chicom government.
and he got it on the other flights... how???
Nail clippers? We’re they afraid you might clip nails of the pilots or crew?
I might agree with you if he wasn’t going their to meet with communist officials.
“ He is gonna wish TSA found it rather than surrendering to the Chicoms.”
We’ll see. He is a Chicom collaborator.
Yup!
[5 WEEK!! Vacation in SE Asia with his wife]
Have to give him some credit for bringing his wife.
“It’s easier to forget about your pistol in your bag than you think. Happens very often.”
I don’t doubt you, but, when I travel, every bag is empty when I start packing. My suitcase and backpack are completely empty down to the bare insides.
But everybody is different.
They took an unopened jar of peanut butter from me.
Ditto that. Especially since he’s pro-gun and on our side. But judging from some of the comments, I wonder whose side they’re on.
I guess you have never found yourself on a flight with same day notice.
Any other course of action is stupid.
Why was he in China?
If he’s telling the truth that he had no idea was there, then it’s a miracle that one of his kids or grandkids didn’t find the gun in his house. Imbecile!
“The Biden administration will probably tell the Chinese that 14 years isn’t a long enough prison sentence.”
I’m tempted to “LOL” at that remark.
Actually Biden will probably say “He’s MAGA — keep him.”
I usually don’t take five week vacations to China with one day notice.
But you don’t seem to grasp what I’m talking about, or to distinguish between the various ideas involved.
