A Washington state senator was arrested at Hong Kong Airport and faces up to 14 years in jail after discovering mid-flight he had brought his gun with him on the plane.
Longview Republican Jeff Wilson was flying with his wife Trisha to the Chinese city at the start of a five-week vacation in South-East Asia when he realized his mistake.
Reaching into his hand luggage for a 'piece of gum' he discovered the firearm in there as well which had also escaped the attention of security staff when he set off from Portland in Oregon.
'It was an honest mistake, and I expect the situation to be resolved shortly,' he wrote on his website.
But he was arrested on arrival in the repressive former colony, thrown into jail and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.
The senator, who was elected in 2020, denied reports that the weapon was discovered during a search on arrival, insisting he 'immediately went to customs officials and called their attention to the issue', at the end of the 15-hour flight.
He said the revolver was unloaded and is registered in Washington, where he holds a concealed carry license.
But he faces up to 14 years in one of Hong Kong's 'correctional facilities' and a fine of $12,800 for arriving with a firearm not registered in the Chinese territory.
Private ownership of guns is outlawed by the Chinese Communist Party in the tightly governed territory.
The city's Commissioner of Police only grants them to police officers, armed security guard services and operators of exclusive shooting range clubs.
Wilson has been a strong pro-gun advocate in his native state and sponsored a law this summer which made it easier for Washington's museums to obtain historic firearms without the need for background checks.

State Senator
5 WEEK!! Vacation in SE Asia with his wife
Behold, the Swamp
I thought the same thing but I wonder because he was a politician did he get a pass from security and waived thru
I can’t relate with the attitude of so many posters on this thread.
This guy faces a horrible circumstance, beyond imagination. And the only thing you people can think of is to call him names.
It’s as if the satanic cabal has mind controlled you people into abandoning your patriotic Christian heritage, which is based on the Ten Commandments, namely love your neighbor.
Are you all really that weak-minded?
At Singapore airport security confiscated my 2 inch pocket knife I use for cutting fruits during travel. It was a very nice swiss stainless steel knife.
5 week vacation?

It figures he would be a member of the stupid party.
I was thinking along those lines. It's been a while since I've flown, but couldn't he have stashed it somewhere like the lavatory or down the toilet and taken the next flight home? Or maybe he would rather go to jail than hear his wife bitch about the ruined vacation.
God also blessed us with common sense as well as compassion.
We will have to trade high profile, very damaging Chinese spies for this POS.
Keep him. Let him learn how to use chopsticks.
Yes, he found the gun inflight.
Step in the lavatory, toss the gun in the trash and get on the next flight home.
They took a very nice wine opener form me and fingernail clippers.
bkmk
It’s easier to forget about your pistol in your bag than you think. Happens very often.
He is gonna wish TSA found it rather than surrendering to the Chicoms.
I agree with you.
It’s very easy to forget your gun in a backpack. I almost went through airport security with a handgun once. Luckily, in the rental car shuttle, I reached into my bag for something, and realized I hadn’t taken my gun out. I had time to go back and put it in the car.
It was a very close call.
Pay attention when you’re in Communist China.
The Biden administration will probably tell the Chinese that 14 years isn’t a long enough prison sentence.
The rights of the US Constitution play little role when in a foreign country. His only ‘rescue’ will be political/diplomatic. And THAT is only if he’s a Democrat State Senator.
I was going to post this also.

“ Wilson, a port commissioner in Longview, had planned to meet with counterparts at the port of Shanghai, in addition to traveling to Thailand, Cambodia and Malaysia. He said he hoped to resume his itinerary when the case is resolved.”
Why was he meeting Chicoms?
