Pastor’s 3-year-old son accidentally shoots 2-year-old brother with dad’s gun outside church

The 3-year-old son of a North Carolina pastor accidentally shot his 2-year-old brother in the head with their father’s gun in a church parking lot — and is miraculously expected to make a full recovery.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. Sunday outside River Valley Baptist Church in Morganton — a city about 75 miles northwest of Charlotte. The pastor of the church, Rev. Adam Vines, told WBTV that his older son had gotten hold of a gun in the side door of the family’s parked van and accidentally fired the weapon, injuring his younger brother, Daniel Vines. The Vines family were attending an evening church service at the time of the shooting.

Vines said luckily the bullet did not pierce his son’s brain, and he was able to talk and move.

“It did go in behind his ear, but it went across the corner of the lower side, instead of going through the brain,” the father-of-five pastor said. Daniel was airlifted by helicopter to the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he underwent emergency surgery and was listed in stable condition Monday, according to his dad. “We’re lucky it wasn’t as bad of a damage as first thought,” Vines said, adding that Daniel is expected to make a full recovery but will require therapy. The pastor also said that his older son who fired the gun was “in shock.” Burke County Sheriff Robert Hinceman told WSOC-TV that his deputies have confiscated the pastor’s handgun as part of the ongoing investigation.

It will be up to the district attorney to decide if charges should be filed in connection with the shooting.

And he's going to carry that with him for the rest of his life.

A somewhat fortunate outcome to a potentially awful event. Gun owners need to maintain control of their firearms, be it in the home, or while out. Especially true if kids are around. So many easy ways to do this, be it in a holster, in a gun vault, or other means. You cant just leave it laying around if there is even the slightest chance some unauthorized person can get hold of it.

Brilliant.

NY Post of course had to gratuitously add that the man was a pastor, and of course, the word “church.”

If he worked at McDonalds instead, would they have mentioned his job? or that it “outside church?”

What’s the point of that, besides pure propaganda?

And he's going to carry that with him for the rest of his life.

Fortunately (I'm guessing) he won't be carrying any firearms. At last, he shouldn't be.

While he is pacing back and forth in a 12 x 6 cell.

Agreed. I was just talking to my wife about this YESTERDAY. She told me were babysitting my grandson next week. His dad is going to a friends to work on a car and offered to take him with. My daughter said that he absolutely can not go to that house until she knows and sees for herself that every gun is 100% secure.

I'm so glad she had the forethought to consider this. It kind of makes me feel a little sick to my stomach to think about "what if she hadn't".

After his three year old shoots his two year old, I'll bet the 12 x 6 is nothing compared to the cell he is pacing within his soul.

Well he was the pastor of the church where it happened and the family was attending a service when it happened so both details are fairly relevant.

“Vines also said God is working in this tragedy, and he’s asking for prayer for both of his sons, including the one who he says accidentally fired that shot.”

I really couldn’t understand what you were saying in your post. Except it did come across that you seem afraid of guns.

I know this is picky, but...
"The 3-year-old son ... is miraculously expected to make a full recovery."
No, actually it's the 2-year-old that was shot who is expected to make a full recovery.

In Snejana Farberov”s native language, there must be no relative pronouns.

I'm not afraid of guns. I carried one and scored marksmanship in the Navy back in the day. Carried one on watch and as a member of in-port and at-sea security detail. I'm afraid of stupid, irresponsible, or mentally ill people with guns.

But I do tend to empathize with the pain that an irresponsible person must feel when something tragic like this comes out of it.

The Colonel’s Wife always makes sure my home defense weapon is unloaded and put in the closet and the handguns are in the safe when the grands are visiting. I tend to overlook the 12-gauge since it’s always next to the bed.

Here in California the law says weapons must be locked up. That's why my shotgun near the bed has a trigger lock on it, and handguns are in a safe, because we have grandkids that visit. Stupid laws, because the kids know where my cutting tools are in my toolshed - but the kids hopefully won't become stupid.
