Shortly before attackers from Gaza poured into Israel at dawn on Saturday, Israeli intelligence detected a surge in activity on some of the Gazan militant networks it monitors. Realizing something unusual was happening, they sent an alert to the Israeli soldiers guarding the Gazan border, according to two senior Israeli security officials.
But the warning wasn’t acted upon, either because the soldiers didn’t get it or the soldiers didn’t read it.
Shortly afterward, Hamas, the group that controls Gaza, sent drones to disable some of the Israeli military’s cellular communications stations and surveillance towers along the border, preventing the duty officers from monitoring the area remotely with video cameras. The drones also destroyed remote-controlled machine guns that Israel had installed on its border fortifications, removing a key means of combating a ground attack.
That made it easier for Hamas assailants to approach and blow up parts of the border fence and bulldoze it in several places with surprising ease, allowing thousands of Palestinians to walk through the gaps.
These operational failures and weaknesses were among a wide array of logistical and intelligence lapses by the Israeli security services that paved the way for the Gazan incursion into southern Israel, according to four senior Israeli security officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss a sensitive matter and their early assessment of what went wrong.
The brazen infiltration of more than 20 Israeli towns and army bases in that raid was the worst breach of Israel’s defenses in 50 years and shattered the nation’s sense of security. For hours, the strongest military in the Middle East was rendered powerless to fight back against a far weaker enemy, leaving villages defenseless for most of the day against squads of terrorists who killed more than 1,000 Israelis...

Overreliance on technology instead of boots on the ground; over-concentration of commanding officers in a single base that was overrun; and plain deception by Hamas that hoodwinked Israeli intelligence: a recipe for disaster.
A low budget 9/11. Hang gliders instead of airliners.
I concur with your comments. This is my opinion based upon what I’ve been able to analyze.
Hamas still needed help. The front line terrorists are not this smart.
Not only that, but I find it unfathomable that the surveillance system on the border fence relied solely on cellular towers for wireless signal transmission, and that there were no hardline connections as a backup.
Once drones took them down, the Israel border security in that area were essentially blinded, unaware of the breach until it was too late.
Yet one young women knew something was wrong and had her kibbutz ready to slaughter the invaders, which they did.
Ha! LOL. I’m getting cynical in my old age.
The potential enemy has to be terrified of return fire.
They obviously weren’t.
Return fire doesn’t have to be lead.
Surround Gaza and shut off the power, water and supplies.
Leave one exit open.
Grab them as they come out and put them on ships to Iran.
Lots of land in Iran.
Lots of sympathetic Moslems in Iran.
Lots of American Taxpayer money in Iran courtesy of our traitor Democrats.
It’s a real win/win situation.
I have detected the glee with which the MSNBC crowd is addressing this as a way to attack Netanyahu. Merits and demerits of however this was handled/mishandled aside, make sure you filter out this animus from reporting, cuz it’s dripping.
The East Germans were closer to correct. That East - West wall / barrier / fence was quite secure. They also had armed and guarded towers at frequent intervals with shoot-to-kill orders. I know in the German situation it was designed to keep people "IN" but it did seem to work.
War starts on Saturday.
NYT reports on Tuesday, after what I’m sure must havre been such a deep, deep, deep investigation, that Israel blew it and in effect their intelligence failure brought this all on themselves.
Nobody questions how the NYT could gather all the relevant information this fast, analyze it and (for the first time in memory, at least for the NYT) get their reporting right.
If you don’t know what you’re talking about, shut up. At least that way, no one can tell just how stupid you are. Of course the NYT chose the opposite: punish all your vomit as fast as you can and don’t worry that no one will remember how badly you misread the story when future sensationalist reporting grabs their attention.
The news game is so smutty these days.
There are things not known yet. Complacency is the deadly enemy of vigilance and it is rampant among the upcoming generation. I think that is probably a big part of this.

(Those soldiers killed early in attack).
Thank God sobriety is settling in today.
Absolutely. This op was far beyond the capabilities of the usual head choppers.
I suspect Israel was relying too much on electronics int and fancy gadgets rather than Mark 1 Eyeballs.
Garden variety incompetence, as bad as it is, is much preferable to malicious and purposeful negligence, or that all of your high-tech security is in fact useless for its intended purpose.
For what it's worth, this article corroborates
to call this an intelligence failure is the understatement of the century!
THOUSANDS of people knew about this attack!!!!!!!!
THOUSANDS!!!!!!!!!!!
where the heck where all the worlds intelligence agencies?
have they all been assigned to infiltrate MAGA organizations!?!?!
"For what it's worth, this NYT article corroborates this report by Politico which quotes an Israeli officer by name.
I can guarantee you that the FBI had more intelligence officers at the Jan 6th protest than the CIA in all of Gaza!!!!!
