~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama

ALmaxwellgunter5

Maxwell Air Force Base, officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, is a United States Air Force (USAF) installation under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The installation is located in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Occupying the site of the first Wright Flying School, it was named in honor of Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell, a native of Atmore, Alabama.

ALmaxwellgunter1

The base is the headquarters of Air University (AU), a major component of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education (PME). The host wing for Maxwell-Gunter is the 42d Air Base Wing (42 ABW).

The Air Force Reserve Command's 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) is a tenant unit and the only operational flying unit at Maxwell. The 908 AW and its subordinate 357th Airlift Squadron (357 AS) operates eight C-130H Hercules aircraft for theater airlift in support of combatant commanders worldwide. As an AFRC airlift unit, the 908th is operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command (AMC).

ALmaxwellgunter4

Gunter Annex is a separate installation under the 42 ABW. Originally known as Gunter Field, it later became known as Gunter Air Force Station (Gunter AFS) when its runways were closed and its operational flying activity eliminated. It was later renamed Gunter Air Force Base (Gunter AFB) during the 1980s.

As a hedge against future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) closure actions, Gunter AFB was consolidated under Maxwell AFB in March 1992 to create a combined installation known as Maxwell/Gunter AFB.

Maxwell AFB is also the site of Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery, a minimum security facility for male inmates.

ALmaxwellgunter3

In November 2020, the Air Force announced that Maxwell AFB is its preferred choice for basing the MH-139A Grey Wolf Formal Training Unit. The Grey Wolf training mission will replace the 908th Airlift Wing's C-130H Hercules mission, with the first of the new aircraft expected to arrive during 2023.

Howdy, luvie.

Still enjoying decent weather?
Did the tree guys clean up their mess in your back yard to your satisfaction? I sure hope so!

Hey there, radu!

Yes, the weather was still very nice, though a bit warmer than yesterday. The next 3 days will be around 90 and then back down into the 70s. That ol' roller coaster just keeps on goin' around!

And although they got the huge piles cleaned up, they raked up two piles of smaller debris and. just. left. them. 😵‍💫 Plus a wheelbarrow that I don't know who owns it. Possibly our neighbor. And get this. They were going to ask a lot more for finishing the work, because the trunk of that tree is just huge, so our neighbor said just leave it and he'll put up an outdoor light on it or something. Gimme strength. LOL! Oh, and I think they've messed our wifi up by winding up the wires to the house to keep them out of the way of the branches they were hurling to the ground. I'm having to use my cellular data to get online with a hotspot. Grrr

But hubby got THE best photo of the last living branch...

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks Lauren for this morning's thread.

Yesterday at Comanche Lake:

How's everyone doing this morning?

Ugh. Still a little too warm for comfort there, isn’t it? I hope the fall weather moves in to stay SOON.

Tell your neighbor to call those guys, or get the company’s name so you can call them. They can’t just leave that stuff there. The tree isn’t even in your yard! It’s their responsibility to clean up their mess. Get in “beyotch mode” when you call so they can’t put you off. Just keep the thought in mind that they messed up your WiFi. That’ll put ya in the mode. :-)

Did they not check out the tree before giving a quote on taking it down? If they did, they had no excuse for trying to charge more at the last minute. It looks ridiculous as it is now and it’s going to put out new branches.

Find out if they have a web site and have a section for reviews. Pan the heck out of them. LOL As sorry as they are, they probably don’t have that, though, knowing they’d get bad reviews posted.

I guess you can tell that seeing what they did hacks me off. LOL There’s just no excuse for such crummy service.

Man, you have some pretty blue sky over there.
Gizmo seemed to approve of your outing yesterday. Happy face on that pooch. :-)

Nah, I don’t think I’m even going to bother. Hubby can clean up the small piles that are left. Our neighbor offered to do it, but hubby said no worries. So.......LOL

I too am wondering what they thought they were doing when they took our neighbors money if they had seen the thing and knew how thick that trunk was. AND we still don’t have a fence and I hate being without it. I know they’ll replace it, but when?

When I saw photo: “Welcome to the Air University,” I knew that was where my dad went. First he went to AF school in Virginia. We didn’t move to Alabama.

At least your neighbor offered to clean it up. He sounds like a nice guy and a good neighbor to have. It still isn’t right that the tree guys didn’t finish their job. Clean-up is a part of it.

I’m so glad I don’t have neighbors. LOL Any messes I have to clean up are mine, not someone else’s. I picked up a few small branches this afternoon and put them on the burn pile. It was really windy Saturday and again today, and the branches were blown out of trees.

I went out to feed the kitties and when I looked up at the stars, I’d have sworn I saw the cover of that tree overhead. It was clouds blocking the stars in just that position, but it was a strange feeling. LOL!

Yes, as of right now, we have great neighbors. The one that is going to re-build the fence has probably 4 kids, and I hardly ever hear them. If I hadn’t seen them getting in and out of their cars, I’d swear they didn’t have any.

I think I’ll finish this show and head out. I’m getting really sleepy. See ya tomorrow!

You have clouds? Shocker! Must be from those two storm systems moving up and over from the Pacific ..... that will leave us both without any rain from them. LOL They’ll s coot south of here like they will there. I’ll just get clouds.

Wow! Nice neighbors and quiet children. That’s rare. You’re very lucky.

Get a good night’s sleep. I won’t be too far behind you .... I hope. I was up WAY too late this morning watching a the action at Gaza and I’m getting sleepy already. I’ll have to force myself to turn off the computer soon and it won’t be easy. LOL It’s been pretty busy over there and is cranking up as time goes on.

Catch ya tomorrow for the quiz.

Regarding Wright Brothers flight training . . .

I'm a military brat, so if we're reminiscing things military, do any of you remember the following inter-related things: brownie cameras, grainy b&w newsreels, Naval Air Ships (blimps), Lakehurst NAS, and the Hindenburg?

Of course!

I have a memory...I am not even sure if it was a real one, or if it somehow just formed in my mind, because I must have been only 3 or 4 years old at the time. I believe I have a memory of being an infant, carried by my mother or father, but even that one like the one described below, is hard to tell if it is real or not. And it is more like a picture than a moving memory.

I have a memory of sitting in the grass on a sunny day with clear blue skies on the lawn of our house in Portsmouth, RI back around 1960 I am guessing.

And I saw blimps, several of them, maybe two, maybe three float by overhead.

In my mind, it is more of a snapshot than a little movie, which is the way a lot of my memories are. I have wondered a few times over my life about that.

Just now doing a search, I found that the last airships were retired in 1962, so...I don’t know.

But yes...I remember all those things...:)

You're speaking here of an experience rather than something not real. Blimps moved slowly and rather close overhead, allowing pilots to clearly see people, houses, cars, running dogs, and most likely you, looking up at them.:-)

Yeah. Clouds! What a shock. I hope there are no clouds on Saturday. The annular eclipse is supposed to be right over where I live, and Mark Sudduth from HurricaneTrack.com will be here to photograph and study it. We’re looking forward to seeing him again.
