~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, Alabama Maxwell Air Force Base, officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, is a United States Air Force (USAF) installation under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The installation is located in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Occupying the site of the first Wright Flying School, it was named in honor of Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell, a native of Atmore, Alabama. The base is the headquarters of Air University (AU), a major component of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education (PME). The host wing for Maxwell-Gunter is the 42d Air Base Wing (42 ABW).
The Air Force Reserve Command's 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) is a tenant unit and the only operational flying unit at Maxwell. The 908 AW and its subordinate 357th Airlift Squadron (357 AS) operates eight C-130H Hercules aircraft for theater airlift in support of combatant commanders worldwide. As an AFRC airlift unit, the 908th is operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command (AMC). Gunter Annex is a separate installation under the 42 ABW. Originally known as Gunter Field, it later became known as Gunter Air Force Station (Gunter AFS) when its runways were closed and its operational flying activity eliminated. It was later renamed Gunter Air Force Base (Gunter AFB) during the 1980s. As a hedge against future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) closure actions, Gunter AFB was consolidated under Maxwell AFB in March 1992 to create a combined installation known as Maxwell/Gunter AFB.
Maxwell AFB is also the site of Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery, a minimum security facility for male inmates. In November 2020, the Air Force announced that Maxwell AFB is its preferred choice for basing the MH-139A Grey Wolf Formal Training Unit. The Grey Wolf training mission will replace the 908th Airlift Wing's C-130H Hercules mission, with the first of the new aircraft expected to arrive during 2023. October 10
Hope for the Hurting
My soul is in deep anguish. How long, Lord, how long?
Psalm 6:3“Most people carry scars that others can’t see or understand.” Those deeply honest words came from Major League Baseball player Andrelton Simmons, who opted out of the end of the 2020 regular season due to mental health struggles. Reflecting on his decision, Simmons felt he needed to share his story to encourage others facing similar challenges and to remind others to show compassion.
Invisible scars are those deep hurts and wounds that can’t be seen but still cause very real pain and suffering. In Psalm 6, David wrote of his own deep struggle—penning painfully raw and honest words. He was “in agony” (v. 2) and “deep anguish” (v. 3). He was “worn out” from groaning, and his bed was drenched with tears (v. 6). While David doesn’t share the cause of his suffering, many of us can relate to his pain.
We can also be encouraged by the way David responded to his pain. In the midst of his overwhelming suffering, he cried out to God. Honestly pouring out his heart, he prayed for healing (v. 2), rescue (v. 4), and mercy (v. 9). Even with the question “How long?” (v. 3) lingering over his situation, David remained confident that God “heard [his] cry for mercy” (v. 9) and would act in His time (v. 10).
Because of who our God is, there is always hope. .
Reflect & Pray
How can you express your struggle to God when experiencing deep emotional anguish? How have you experienced His healing, mercy, and rescue?
Heavenly Father, give me courage to express my deepest pain and to welcome Your presence and healing into my situation.

It has been wonderfully pleasant here this past week, enjoying the nice days for sure, as I am sure you are.
Leaving Saturday for an event in Oklahoma for 11 days, then a big 3 week horse event and a Christmas Parade before the end of the year here when I get back.
Fun stuff and I am grateful.
Take care and have a great week!

Glad you’ve had great weather to enjoy. It sure is nice to be able to walk out the door and not melt, isn’t it?
You have quite a bit going on the next couple of months, don’t you? You’ll be ready for that break after Christmas! But it does sound like a lot of fun is in store between now and then.

Regarding Wright Brothers flight training . . .
The first U.S. military - trained - flying preceded the “Wright Flying School” that was, for a few months of 1910, based in Alabama.
See:
Aeronautical Division, U.S. Signal Corps
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeronautical_Division,_U.S._Signal_Corps
In November 1909, Lt. Louis Foulois became the only officer detailed to the Aeronautical Division.

Love it. You must have read one of my posts somewhere in which I wrote of how much I admire what they did.
I even have a Wright Brother tie that I wore to work today...:)
Orville (I think it was Orville) created and implemented the first usable wind tunnel.
They used it in a fully modern fashion, constructing airfoils and such attached to scales to measure the lift of the airfoil to find out why, when using the tables and calculations of Otto Lilienthal, their gliders were underperforming. Apparently, they tried everything else, and it was the only place they hadn't looked.
They just assumed Otto Lilienthal's calculations were correct, but when they tested, they found out they simply were not.
I use the Wright Brothers and their race against Samuel Langley as an example of what private money can do versus public money, when there is skin in the game!

Thanks, Lauren, for the Road Trip.
Maxwell AFB [as it was known then]
was where our son was commissioned as a 2nd Lt.
He said it was really rough, but he made it.
Then later gave it up. LOL!
Retired as a Master Sgt.
