After Covid completely upended life on college campuses, students and recent graduates are encountering a new challenge: student loans.
Millions of college students and graduates — including Black women, who carry the highest burden of student debt — held on to the hope of President Joe Biden’s student loan forgiveness plan, which the Supreme Court struck down in June. Yet, Biden is aiming to push policies that would provide relief for loan borrowers, with his announcement Wednesday approving $9 billion in student loan forgiveness for 125,000 borrowers.
Still, as payments resume, several Black students and graduates told NBC News that they are not ready for the financial obligation, including those who say the pandemic stripped away large portions of their college experience.
Black college students face specific challenges when it comes to eliminating their student debt. Black graduates hold an average of $25,000 more in student loan debt than their white counterparts, according to the Education Data Initiative. Four years after graduation, Black college graduates also owe an average of 188% more than white students borrowed, EDI reported.
These disparities for Black graduates are directly linked to the lack of generational wealth in Black families. The median white family with a full-time worker has 7.6 times more wealth than the median Black family that also has a full-time worker, according to the American Sociological Association’s Contexts magazine.

They signed a contract. Foolishly in many cases but still a legal contract.
My son graduated as an astronautical engineer a year before the recent unpleasantness.
1. He took out some loans
2. He majored in a field that would pay well enough to repay said loans
3. Upon graduation he rented a house with several friends who all lived cheap and paid off their debt.
4. He did not buy a brand new car.
5. He paid the debt within a year
6. He still lives in that house and lives frugally
7. He did buy lots of guns

Seems the focus should be getting Black women into STEM where repaying student loan debt is trivial 3% to 7% of first decade earnings.
If black women are all over the chemistry, physics and a math departments, I got zero issues with this statement. But checking the mechanics, black women pick piss poor majors.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. Millions of whites, Asians, and hispanics leave home at age 18 with the shirts on their backs. Some go to college with loans, scholarships and part time jobs. Some learn a trade. Some take entry level low paying clerical and manual labor jobs and work their way up to the middle class. Some join the military and go to college during the service or afterward. Some work and go to community college, saving money to pay for their last two years at a university.
The struggle to pay off college loans, or loans taken out to fund a small business, is the same no matter your race. Some are fortunate to have family help, most do not.
It is time for people to stop complaining about the potholes in the road of life. Life isn’t fair. Work hard and produce something of value. Take accountability. Stay clean of drugs and don’t have children out of wedlock. Live within your means. Constantly improve your skills and performance. Go the extra mile. Live up to high ethical standards. Seize opportunities when they appear. Life will be good no matter what race you are or how humble your beginnings.
Because they pretend they aren't racists.
And most people pretend to believe people like them to avoid retaliation.

Have the Universities endowment funds pay for them.
