PORTLAND - The drive west was everything Adrian Hammerle and Eleora Gouine had hoped it would be.
The trip from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Portland, Oregon was a long one -- 2,300 miles -- but Adrian couldn't wait to introduce Eleora to Portland. After all, he'd lived here from 2017 to 2020.
They'd heard about Portland's crime issues but understood it's something all big cities are going through. The day after arriving at their downtown Portland hotel, though, their excitement turned upside down when they headed to their car to find some coffee.
“And when we got to the car, I looked down at the ground and I saw that there was a bunch of glass, and I was like, oh, weird. OK, and I went to go open the door and saw that the window was smashed to pieces.
Distressed by what had happened, they decided to park in a different garage -- on the top floor -- figuring that would be safer.
A few days later, they learned it wasn't.
Two break-ins in a matter of days. The city they had driven thousands of miles to see had turned scary.
And just like that, their Portland bubble was popped. Their safety became paramount.
“I can say that I was definitely a little more fearful and making sure that everything was good around us. Just because you know that, like, I don't know, I'm not going to lie, I was kind of scared.”
And what had happened to the city that Adrian remembered?
"I'm not really sure where it's gone. It's gotten so bad, but it's a lot different than what I'm used to, what I was used to,” he said.
And they still had the drive back to Michigan with plastic film covering their windows the whole way.

They can gentrify all they want, but if the same kind of people remain in charge and pursue the same polices, then the same situation will just repeat. Maybe they get a good decade or two though before the cycle happens again.

Exactly. We are at war. We must be ruthless, unforgiving and without mercy for anyone. The very little fight back last week caught them off guard. We should take that as a lesson and encouragement.

I’ve heard that that doesn’t work anymore. It pisses them off if they don’t find anything good to steal so your car gets smashed anyway.

So, they had heard of the crime, but ignored it and thought it wouldn’t affect them? Apparently, they didn’t do their due diligence and look a little deeper into the issue. If they had, they would have watched the videos and read the news of all the places he remembered and realized those place were there no longer. Maybe they are CNN viewers.
Also, he took his wife into a dangerous area with little concern for her safety. How irresponsible. I assume he wasn’t armed so it’s a good thing they didn’t encounter the ones who broke into their vehicle.

Liberals see what they want to see. Most of them live in a would where reality and consequences don’t exist.
Portland is where anachronistic hippies go to retire when they’re in their late 20s and early 30s. Bums with no jobs, no real skills and no penchants but self-indulgent nonsense. Strippers, geeks with green and purple hair. Anarchists, protestors and generally disposed to dislike anything about government or living with other parts of society.
Then, of course, there are also just the bums. My daughter lived there 2 years and will never go back. No one in their right mind would buy a million dollar home here and expect any kind of commensurate life to go with it.
Far too many people don’t know, or block all knowledge of, what’s happening in cities run by the hard left.
How could they be so stupid? Don’t they ever read anything other than the mainstream news media?
If you are a productive member of society, or you are non-violent, or you have never stolen anything, and you go into one of those liberal hellholes, you can expect to lose everything, with the blessing of the democrat politicians.
Our major cities are run by democrats and are violent hellholes.

There is all kinds of opportunity for the GOP to make some inroads in these big cities, but there is absolutely no effort being made to win over voters. Mind you, the GOPe will find plenty of excuses to do nothing as we've seen for decades, now.
