When Mitt Romney announced his intended retirement from the U.S. Senate on Sept. 13, 2023, the Atlantic published an excerpt from his upcoming biography, in which the 2012 Republican presidential nominee told author McKay Coppins, “A very large portion of my party really doesn’t believe in the Constitution.”
This claim would have been startling 15 years ago. For decades, the Republican Party has been the party of conservatism and a champion for the Constitution.
Romney is clear that Donald Trump, who leads what he calls a “populist” and “demagogic” portion of the party, is to blame. And Romney is not the only concerned Republican.
Former Vice President Mike Pence, now running for the GOP presidential nomination, recently asked a crowd at a campaign event, “Will we be the party of conservatism, or will we follow the siren song of populism unmoored to conservative principles?”

Romney’s so full of sh#t he doesn’t know whether he’ coming or going. But, thank God, he’s going. Last parting shots from a loser. Trump is a greater Patriot than Romney by order of magnitude.
I Love Trump because he loves America.
But what Trump doesn’t seem to understand is THE CONSTITUTION CREATED AMERICA!
You lose the Constitution and you lose America, like now.
THE ISSUE is REINSTATING THE CONSTITUTION AS THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND.
Few “conservatives” on this site or anywhere else that I can see seem to recognize how absolutely essential it is to reinstate the Law of the Constitution against the feds. Time for that to change.
No he would not. He would understand the marxist threat to it though.
What a load of crap. Reagan is the last President before Trump to prioritize the base of the party over the establishment and its donors. And, that’s why the GOP establishment tried to undermine him and prevent him from getting the nomination in both 1976 and 1980.

The spin is off the chart. Reagan was a lot closer in ideology to Trump than McCarthy or Romney. Reagan worked with the establishment but like Trump, he wasn’t one of them.
Everyone wants a claim on Reagan
Reagan certainly knew all about the corporate, permanent, so-called “progressive,” government-at-all-costs GRIFTERS that inhabit Washington DC from both parties. Its worse now, but they were around in his day too.
He would not have accepted the likes of Mitch Romney as leaders of the GOP
It’s a much different country than it was in Reagan’s time.
I bet you all thought Mormons like Romney were supposed to be Drug and Alcohol free... Not so fast, this dude Romney is on some good chit that seriously damaged his brain
This person obviously supports election corruption, and the communist takeover of our military and justice system. As he created the trade wars, which need to be fought on one hand because our corrupt government regulatory system is amuck and creates an imbalance in manufacturing, food production and everything done in the US, Trump also tried to deregulate the EPA and other bureaucracies in our gov. It’s not the same conservatism because the enemy is now communism where before the enemy was just democrats.
They love to tell us Reagan was a Bolshevik. I remember in 1992 the media said he was voting for Bill Clinton.
Reagan was elected 43 years ago. In those days there were moderate and patriotic Dems, even WW2 vets, in charge of the party.
Moderate Dems died, retired and got swept out. Now the Dems are Stalinists. Chuck Colson warned us.
This is no time for the GOP to be moderate.
The term “conservative” has become a buzzz word used by insider political frauds and posers who are anything but conservative. Don’t believe me, just look at the past 50 years of open borders, debt, death and decline in every direction...
“But what Trump doesn’t seem to understand is THE CONSTITUTION CREATED AMERICA!
You lose the Constitution and you lose America, like now.

This is the NormieCon delusion that if we just “Constitution harder” we can make it all better.
For a consitution to work, you need a homogenous population that basically agrees on the major tenets.
The constitution also has to be consistent with the “folk ways” and “folk traditions” of the people.
Neither of those conditions exists, and hasn’t for 100+ years. Not in the USA. And not in any country in the West.
The Constitution’s final failure was when the entire system validated the 2020 election steal.
Once your “Constitution” validates stolen elections, it has obviously failed, and it is time to move on to something else.
and no one would recognize today’s Dem party, AKA the Communist Party..look at how they changed, at one time we could disagree with them on policy but they were not as nuts as they are today, men can get pregnant really? there is no gender, everything is racist, everything is sexist, etc etc, they are freaks
This article is full of crap.
The FBI is conservative? Since when?
The election system is fair? Tell me another one.
The author is TDS addled idiot.
“Reagan made a lot of mistakes.
#1 mistake was amnesty.”
Legalizing abortion in California wasn’t much to brag about either.
A video of a carload of guys "tuning up" R-Money would sell like hotcakes.
The author really has no idea what they are talking about. Although they correctly identify conservative ideals, they incorrectly claim Trump was opposed to them.
States rights. The author claims Trump violated states rights by the J6 “insurrection.” That’s false. Some states were violating the constitution by changing their election laws without going through their legislatures. States rights doesn’t mean completely hands off no matter what the states do. They (the states) are still required to follow the constitution.
Government intervention. Again, the author confuses federal powers with states rights. The federal government is responsible for international treaties and controlling what comes across our borders. “Free Trade” is not a conservative ideal. Fair trade is more likely accurate, meaning the federal government should protect our economy from harmful foreign economic activity, like China’s mercantilism.
Support institutions like free press, the military, the DOJ, etc. Supporting national institutions doesn’t mean standing by when those institutions go off the rails. Trump certainly attacked the “fake news” when they lied and warped the news to attack him. As for the military and other federal institutions, it’s not conservative to cover up their weaknesses and abuses. A conservative would try to make those instructions more efficient and eliminate corruption. That was what Trump did.
Trump resurrected and expanded a dying party.
“amnesty” and “illegal immigration” are all about diluting debt per capita with more bodies.
The volume crossing the border directly tracks with rapidity of expansion of federal debt
The bankerz run the borders
