Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) successfully led a coup against now-former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday. He managed to eke out a “win” by rallying the entire Democratic caucus and eight Republicans to oust him. It’s the first time that has happened in U.S. history.
And it’s a total clown show.
Not only does it distract from the already tense budget negotiations, but it makes a laughingstock of the GOP—and the U.S.—and gives Democrats even more leverage to push through their radical policies.
Gaetz got a win, but at what cost? Sure, he’ll raise a lot of campaign money from this—he’s already sending out emails and asking for money on Fox News— but is there a plan going forward? Of course not. The two congressmen whose names have been bandied about as potential House speakers—Jim Jordan (Ohio) and Steve Scalise (La.)—both spoke on behalf of McCarthy ahead of the vote and then voted to keep him as speaker. McCarthy announced tonight that he will not seek reelection as speaker. Gaetz stated emphatically that he doesn’t want the job. At publishing time, Scalise had sort of thrown his hat into the ring, and some are floating Trump as the next speaker, but none of that will be sorted out quickly.
House Democrats and Republicans have been at a stalemate over budget negotiations. The continuing resolution will expire on Nov. 17. There will be another showdown and possible shutdown as the country races toward the proverbial fiscal cliff. Instead of working on that problem, Republicans will be squabbling over the speakership. How does that help the country?
Gaetz, whether intentionally or ignorantly, overplayed his hand. He’s being celebrated in some circles as the brave defender of all that’s good, but not everyone is on board.

Trump took to Truth Social to berate Republicans for their disunity, writing, “Why is it that Republicans are always fighting among themselves, why aren’t they fighting the Radical Left Democrats who are destroying our Country?
Hardly a ringing endorsement of Gaetz’s strategy (if he even had one).
“Hardly a ringing endorsement of Gaetz’s strategy (if he even had one).”
Who knows - after all, all MacCarthy had to do was KEEP HIS PROMISES to the caucus (that’s inside DC talk, by the way).
He didn’t. Hard to blame Gaetz for that.
The plan going forward is this: Enough lying to the voters then doing whatever you want.
That is a GREAT plan. Holding anyone accountable is a good idea.
The rest of them just need to DO THEIR JOB and stop lying to the people.
That’s the plan. Oust them all until it stops.
The is no other ‘Now What?” that is better than that.
Lots of sour grapes and apparent JEALOUSY OF GAETZ being poured out.
Or it’s a repudiation of what McCarthy was doing by continuing the spending by enlisting the help of the Democrats. I take it as frustration with the entire crew that they took over the House, but never really got fully together from the start and made this inevitable.
The government won't be spending money.............is not a bad thing...........
I believed that Gaetz was correct because McCarthy violated their agreement regarding continuing resolutions.
But I watched McCarthy’s press conference after this and I thought he made a very good showing for himself he certainly claimed to have one more security at the border and Significant spending reductions and he denied that he violated any specific agreement.
He also behaved himself well and did not become angry I thought it was a class act.
The question now is who can get enough Democrat votes to offset Republican dissidents and get to 218.
You interpret Trump’s words wrong. He is absolutely standing by Matt Gaetz. The Republican’s would rather fight amongst themselves instead of uniting, if uniting means listening to their constituents whom they despise.
Has been for 30 years, Gaetz pulled the band aid off, now there is lots of work to do, real work. First, shut down the border, not a penny for anything until and unless Biden starts enforcing it NOW and totally seals it off, yes, start building the wall again. Until this happens, no money.
Exactly my thought. Now, instead doing any legislating and solving the budget problems, Republicans will spend all the time on trying to find a speaker.
The Dems and the press will have a super time.
Everything will now be blamed on irresponsible Rep who cannot accomplish anything.
I think we will see Dems now in charge forever.
Jim Jordan just threw his hat into the ring.
All these Congressmen denouncing what Gaetz and the Eight did to McCarthy, are any of them going on a hunger strike to force McCarthy back in?
Rather than making the GOP a laughing stock it exposes them for who they are...diehard swamp creatures who would rather go along to get along than stand on principles and do what’s right for America and Americans first.
Agree. He’s a talented superstar.
>>Hard to blame Gaetz for that.
If he doesn’t have a plan, it is easy to blame Gaetz - its easy to criticize and burn things down, much harder to build them up and make it better. Lets hope he has a follow-on idea.
There seems to be a misunderstanding. The House continues normal operations under a Speaker Pro Tem. The Speaker chair only needs to be filled 1st in Jan of a new Congress to set the rules. Since that was done in Jan the GOP can take time to elect a new Speaker
Think about it. If a Speaker died while in office, the Congress would still need to keep working while a new Speaker was elected
I agree with newt. Gaetz needs to be kicked out of the republican Caucus and opposed by a strong opponent in the Florida Republican Primary next year.
“Gaetz got a win, but at what cost?”
Precisely.
McCarthy failed. He did not deliver. No debt limit and a CR. No subpoenas for the Biden investigation. He slow walks everything into Democrats hands. He needed to be fired based on a lack of performance. It’s a shame that Democrats had to help and we have a House full of Republican pussies. I’ll take the win. And yes, it is a win. I can’t tolerate the faggot.
