Lego drops prototype blocks made of recycled plastic bottles as they "didn't reduce carbon emissions"

Copenhagen, Denmark — Denmark's Lego said on Monday that it remains committed to its quest to find sustainable materials to reduce carbon emissions, even after an experiment by the world's largest toymaker to use recycled bottles did not work. Lego said it has "decided not to progress" with making its trademark colorful bricks from recycled plastic bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate, known as PET, and after more than two years of testing "found the material didn't reduce carbon emissions."

Lego enthusiastically announced in 2021 that the prototype PET blocks had become the first recycled alternative to pass its "strict" quality, safety and play requirements, following experimentation with several other iterations that proved not durable enough.

The company said scientists and engineers tested more than 250 variations of PET materials, as well as hundreds of other plastic formulations, before nailing down the prototype, which was made with plastic sourced from suppliers in the U.S. that were approved by the Food and Drug Administration and European Food Safety Authority. On average, a one-liter plastic PET bottle made enough raw material for ten 2 x 4 Lego bricks

If it didn’t increase carbon emissions then how could recycling NOT be a benefit?!

In the melt and hot-forming processes?
Or according to some mass balance calculations?

Maybe I’ll read the article later this evening and find out.
FReep on!

Recycling is such a feel good scam. Aside from a few items like metals the rest is just garbage. Burn it for electricity or bury it.

I remember in Jr hs my biology teacher explaining to us young skulls full of mush how plants and trees need CO to survive. Trees are good they told us. Trees help negate the effects of gloBULL warming they told us. Trees are esthetically pleasing they told us. And the crops needed to alleviate world starvation (and support a vegan diet) need CO to survive they told us. Trust the science they told us. Now CO is bad? Were we lied to?

CO is bad. It can kill you. CO2 is good. Plant food.

It’s likely cars aren’t either...it’s simply impossible to measure against any results. 10 tornados this year...five the next 8 the next...Results like this can NEVER prove the climate is changing as a result of reducing farts and going all EV. They’re simply statistics...

We had American Plastic Bricks, Lincoln Logs, A.C. Gilbert Erector and Chemistry sets, and Penicillin. And Lionel O-Gauge Electric Trains. All of which were brought to us by those incredibly inventive geniuses, the Puerto Ricans and the Mexicans. It’s why Americans “have no culture of their own”.

“The use of plastic bottle actually increased carbon emissions according to Lego.”

There was an article awhile back on how one company recycles glass into sand - to be used for sand blasting.

I imagine the same is true for that operation. The company must get lots of government incentives for being green in order to stay in business. Their recycled sand must cost WAY more than just digging it up out of the ground.

Sort of like solar panel companies.
