Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson announced on Friday that he is switching parties from a Democrat to a Republican.
Johnson announced the change in an op-ed that was published in the Wall Street Journal on Friday.
"Next spring, I will be voting in the Republican primary. When my career in elected office ends in 2027 on the inauguration of my successor as mayor, I will leave office as a Republican," Johnson wrote.
Prior to being elected the mayor of Dallas in 2019, Johnson represented Dallas in the Texas Legislature for nine years as a Democrat.
"I was never a favorite of the Democratic caucus, and the feeling was mutual," Johnson wrote.

But ... has he had the surgery?
Right. Just what the GOP/RNC needs. Yet another democrat to water down the party.
It’s time to admit that we need a new and real America First Party.
When will we learn?
Tell me the glaring differences between the two halves of the same party. I’ll wait.
A ping out to the Texas Ping list, founded by Windflier.
Not sure what to think of this ... another camel's nose, a finger in the wind or a true believer?
Another special Texas summer edition for your perusal.
As always, please FReepmail me if you want on or off the Texas Ping list.
Blessings, and stay cool!
As a former Democrat myself, I think it is possible that he “saw the light” or at least parts of it some time ago. The question is what one is converting to? I like the conservatism in the Republican Party, but mistrust the RINO cronyism and the neo-con contingent. Maybe this aspect made this guy squeamish too. But going independent as an office holder cuts you off from money and support. He had some thinking to do.
I’m just saying I welcome this man who is trying to serve his city. I have no problem cutting him some slack for how long it took him.
How do you know he won’t be to the right of the rhinos?
I thought he is from Austin. Cliffs Of Dover is one of my favorite tunes.
Wes Wise was the first mayor of Dallas that I remember.
I hope this is very good news for Dallas and will inspire some others that are “on the fence” to make the move!
He wants Abbots job. Either that or Cornyn’s. See if he can win a house seat for starters. If we have a use for him by all means..
Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan comes to mind. Same thing could be said for Texas Senator John Cornyn.
After the term ends. An out-of-office Republican. BFD.
Besides, trust but verify, and treat with extreme caution. Remember Ray Epps and the FBI horde.
He is freinds with Cruz and Patrick.
If it’s just a reaction to this migrant disaster and it helps to end it, that’s enough.
I don’t expect much more from politicians, even those who make big noise about different issues.
Some balanced thinking there.
Three thoughts:
No open political party will be 100% pure.
The Left would love to see us start a 3rd party.
The smart bet is to strengthen the R party.
ROFL. Trying to avoid execution by the Dallas mobs when the welfare state collapses, I guess. Who knows?
Ha! It’s a step in the right direction.
Thanks!
Thanks for the ping!
