Energy Dept. announces $325M for batteries that can store clean electricity longer
ABC News / Disney ^ | September 22, 2023 | ByISABELLA O'MALLEY

The Energy Department is announcing a $325 million investment in new battery types that can help turn solar and wind energy into 24-hour power it said Friday morning.

The funds will be distributed among 15 projects in 17 states and the Red Lake Nation, a Native American tribe based in Minnesota.

Here is some of what is being funded, through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021:

A project led by Xcel Energy in partnership with long-term battery manufacturer Form Energy will deploy two 100-megawatt battery systems at the site of coal plants that are closing in Becker, Minnesota and Pueblo, Colorado. There are new incentives for businesses that put in clean power installations at existing energy sites.

A project at California's Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, an underserved community, will install a battery system to add reliability for the acute care medical center facing potential power outages from wildfires, floods and heat waves. This one is led by the California Energy Commission in collaboration with Faraday Microgrids.

The Second Life Smart Systems initiative with sites in Georgia, California, South Carolina and Louisiana will use old, but still potent electric vehicle batteries for back-up power for senior centers, affordable housing complexes, and EV chargers.

Another project led by Rejoule, a battery diagnostics company, similarly will use retired EV batteries at three locations, Petaluma, California; Santa Fe, New Mexico and a worker training center at the Red Lake Nation, not far from the border with Canada.

Energy Undersecretary for Infrastructure David Crane said the announced projects will prove the technologies work at scale, help utilities plan for longer-term storage and start bringing down costs.

What happens if people try to store dirty electricity with them?

I’m old but still potent.

Just saying.

And why do we need additional support for a tribe that gathers most of its income from a casino?

Imagine the pollution from these battery plants catching fire. Two large scale battery facilities one in Australia the other in California have had serious fires. The Australian battery fire burned for days despite the best efforts of the local fire brigades.

“can store clean electricity longer”

I really prefer the old batteries that stored dirty energy.

Really?

The batteries know how the energy supplied to them was generated?

I had no idea clean electricity was a thing? How is it different in properties or physics than dirty electricity? How does a battery store clean electricity differently than unclean electricity?

Red Lake Nation, MN. Those batteries should work real well in January and February when the nightly temperature is -20 F.

This is what is so stupid about the use of solar energy. There are places that get a lot more sun than other places. In order these are the most sunny cities:
Pheonix
Tucson
Vegas
Reno
Pueblo, CO
Sacramento
Key West
Flagstaff

The LEAST sunny cities are:
Columbus
Seattle
Syracuse
Anchorage
Pittsburgh
Hilo, HI (it rains a lot)

So, it makes a lot more sense to put up solar panels and give tax credits in these locations. Especially the top five on the sunny list.

What is STUPID is putting up solar panels in places like Seattle or Syracuse that only get sunshine 45% of the time. Yet, the states of NY and WA are giving people tax breaks to put these things on their roof.

"...Form Energy will deploy two 100-megawatt battery systems at the site of coal plants that are closing in Becker, Minnesota and Pueblo, Colorado"
The Sherburne County Generating Station in Becker, MN is rated at 2,238 MW.

The Comanche power station in Pueblo, CO is rated at 1,635 MW.

So they are going to shut down 3,873 of GENERATING capacity and replace it with 200 MW of EXPERIMENTAL STORAGE capacity?

You don't have to be a power engineer to see the folly of this and where we are headed.

These idiots really have the cart before the horse. A sensible company would say "Let's perfect battery storage BEFORE we shut down our conventional generating capacity." The government and company greeniacs say, instead, "No, shut down your conventional generating capacity NOW. We'll figure out how to store 'green' energy later on."

There’s a lot to be said for Lead-Acid batteries.

They can store enough power to make the world turn backwards, but they don’t charge fast and they don’t take many deep discharges.

Fix those two problems and you’ll be a trillionaire.............
