Trump: ‘It was my decision’ to buy into idea that 2020 election was rigged — ‘didn’t respect’ aides who told him he lost

Donald Trump on Sunday said it was “my decision” to believe that the 2020 presidential election was “rigged” — saying he didn’t respect the aides and lawyers who’d told him he’d lost.

The former president, 77, was asked by NBC’s Kristen Welker on “Meet the Press” why he opted to ignore his “most senior lawyers” and campaign staffers about the election results.

“Because I didn’t respect them,” Trump replied.

Welker later asked the Republican frontrunner in the presidential primary whether he was “calling the shots … ultimately?”

“As to whether or not I believed it was rigged? Oh, sure,” Trump answered. “It was my decision. But I listened to some people.”

Last month, Trump attorney John Lauro publicly emphasized that his client’s actions to thwart the election results were done under the advice of counsel.

“Everything that President Trump did was with the advice of lawyers and counsel,” Lauro told NBC. “That’s an absolute defense to a criminal case.”

“This is a protocol you can follow — it’s legal.” ***

“Trump just threw his whole ‘following my lawyers’ advice’ defense under the bus. No, let me correct that: — not just under the bus but under a roaring, speeding, ginormous freight train . . . .,” Harvard University professor emeritus Laurence Tribe***

“And here is where Trump loses his defense that he relied on his lawyers,” attorney and former Rep. Barbara Comstock (R-Va.) said.

There goes the “advice of counsel” defense.

Seriously, if your defense *** is “@MZHemingway wrote a book” you know you’re going to lose at trial. https://t.co/8bfmW5Ku0S

Poor article. Notice the partial quotes with no context.

How could you ask any question (your question: why did Trump repeatedly surround himself with people he didn't respect?) with this Rupert Murdoch, 92, out of context nonsense that passes for an unbiased informative article?

It's junk.

I guess it’s because it’s so hard to defend desanctimonious with all his failures, and illusions of grandeur that he’s now having, with his comments like

‘I will be the president!’

Angry Trumper:  Oh look. Another thread completely not about DeSantis. But let's insult him and throw him into this conversation, because Trump's screw-ups MUST be Meatballs's fault.

And then the article fully quotes Lawrence Tribe, the constitutional moron.

Wow, $100 million pays for a lot of BS.

Got Ron Go. Never back down.

Trump didn’t respect the people telling him he lost.

I believe the election was stolen, but this highlights another problem with Trump...if he doesn't respect people working for him, then why the hell are they there? GET RID OF THEM!

He thinks the election was rigged. He hired lawyers who lawyered on his behalf and he followed their advice ...

He’s slowly but surely losing my support. He needs to STFU! The Official Pedophile of Pennsylvania Avenue doesn’t say a damn thing and he got 82 million ballots. The majority of American voters are ignorant. SHUT UP!!!

Telling the truth among scoundrels is dangerous. That’s all I meant. No one else tells the truth in DC. Not good to be the first to start a fad.

I think he should keep totally silent.

I want him to be exonerated and elected in 2024.

Some very creative wordsmithing taking place in that article to distort what Trump really said.

The ludicrous thegagline thinks he has yet another gotcha proof, because he fails to see this is nothing more than an attempt to change what Donald Trump actually said in the interview video clip. More BS.

I see your point.

However, even silence can be used against you. I can also imagine a headline that reads “Trump Blames Lawyers for the Big Lie.” They would love to run with that.

This has been the entire basis of criticism from myself & others. This kind of unnecessary crap that he willingly steps in almost cancels out the great things about him. My big fear is they are already pushing the western cultures & nations towards a woke, socialist abyss. With every election that they manage to eke out a win in, in the U.S. & otherwestern nations, they consolidate power, suspend freedoms & criminalized opposition.

I’m like everybody else here- conservatism. Is the philosophy that I have believed in since I was old enough to think. My morals are conservative, so are my economic belief & governing philosophy. I hate was leftist stand for. They are killing this great nation, little by little. What a lot of us want is not just a conservative triumph in the primary, but also for our candidate to understand the gravity of we here things are & not to damage our chances of winning in 2024.

I love so many things about Trump- he’s a fighter, he doesn’t much like or respect the elites, he doesn’t favor mass immigration & cheap labor & loss of American jobs. That was what made him so inspiring in 2016. Unfortunately, he doesnt know when to shut up or edit himself, or pivot when something isn’t working. The worst, though, is that he just says & does whatever is in his head at any given moment & he honestly forgets that a candidacy is supposed to be about the people electing you, not about yourself. So, many of us have serious pause because it’s stressful depending on a campaign that wings it & have a plan.

I know many conservative Trump advocates are constantly suspicious that anybody critical of him must be a moderate, establishment type that opposes him & prefers Jeb Bush/Lindsay Graham types. Barf! Most of us, are every bit as opposed to them & what they represent as yall. I think we just want him to smarten up, close his mouth sometimes, put together a ground plan & understand that this race isn’t about him, it’s about wackos that are close to destroying the USA. Everyone just wants him to make smarter choices! 🙄

True. Look at all often negative posts here for the past few weeks whenever Trump opened his mouth.

“No one ever lost an election over the speech he didn’t make.”

“Yet another example of Trump burying himself. “

An example of President Trump standing up, squaring his shoulders, telling the truth and manning up! God bless President Trump.

Oh get serious! A criticism of something somebody says or does or of an element of their campaign does not make somebody a supporter of the deep state. Somebody that supported them would have to like their political stances & feel well represented by them. I dont know much of anybody on here or elsewhere that thinks or feels that way. Don’t be an idiot 🙄

The election was rigged by Biden’s own admission.

Well, actually “the idiot” would be the one that isn’t able to recognize that deep state is controlling desantis. An idiot is the one that gets bent out of shape when those undeniable facts are presented.

Have a real nice day!
