A notable portion of healthy eaters have their good diets canceled out by frequent or low quality snacks, according to a new study in the European Journal of Nutrition released Friday.
The study looked at a group of frequent snackers in the U.K., mostly women, who kept otherwise healthy diets. It found that about a quarter of participants’ snacking was hurting their health due to eating too much or eating low quality snacks, but that snacking alone doesn’t always hurt.

Only 1 in 4? I must have slipped up a couple of times.
So technically...that wouldn't be considered "healthy eating", would it?
My neighbor wears a N95 mask when he’s outside worried about COVID but he’s also an Alcoholic and doesn’t worried about his liver ,D’oh
Three in five are gluttons all the time. It’s really disgusting looking at grotesque fat people all the time.
I usually eat Cheetos with salad to even things out. That’s called a balanced meal.
I lived there ages ago, but was amazed at how big desserts and snacks—especially cookies and candy bars—were.
No comment, of course, on their smiles.
It does seem like the message is that a lot of healthy eaters don’t eat healthy.
This may be a form of the “No True Scotsman” fallacy.
Sorry everyone, I’ve been screwin’ up the average...
We are not into snacks, but we substitute wine and scotch for the usual carbohydrates.
Speaking of salad, who else throws out that 2 week old aspirational bag of Spring Mix regularly?
Oh, and the real life hack trick with Cheetos is not to eat them with salad, but to eat them with chopsticks so your fingers don’t get all orange. Especially important if you’re surfing Free Republic on a tablet.
My wife used to “offset” her chocolate-eating by drinking Diet Coke. LOL. (Little did we know.) Luckily, she’s abandoned Diet Coke.
My snacks are like.....milk and graham crackers....cereal with milk and raspberries, no chips...no soda
I’m sauteeing tomatoes and spinach, garlic and olive oil as we speak...with cheese on top for protein. That’s my morning snack. No breakfast...no lunch...until 4...
Sounds good!
One heirloom egg sunny side, two small pieces of Canadian bacon, one piece of whole grain toast with NZ grass fed butter. And a latte. So technically I am posting during coffee, not after, which is almost the dread posting before coffee, which is generally contraindicated. ;-P
I hate Cheetos fingers when I’m typing.
No.
It’s much, much worse than 1-in-4. I would estimate 2-in-3 based upon my research and observations, maybe even 3-in-4 if you include poor meal selection, including ‘eating out’ and poor management of ingredients.
I literally had a conversation with a guy at work recently about omega-3 and he’s been eating salmon on a regular basis, multiple times/week. He’d claimed it was having no effect upon his health.
Then I watched him make his lunch the other day: Bologna on Franz white bread with lettuce, toxic mayo, processed American cheese and...Cheetos. He made 2 of them.
No joke.
Why is this news? Didn’t we all know that many people are inconsistent with whatever diet they are following? And then come the parties and holidays, with their special food temptations. Today is Rosh Hashanah, for instance, a Jewish holiday that calls for eating apples with honey.
He is recycling his own germs
