CHICAGO EXPLORING CREATION OF CITY-OWNED GROCERY STORE FOR FOOD DESERTS

The issue of food scarcity and food deserts have led to protests and shined a spotlight on deep-rooted inequities in Chicago.

"It is an abomination to think that 10 miles from Englewood people are living twenty years longer because they have access to things they need," said Ameya Pawar, Economic Security Project.

The non-profit Economic Security Project and the city are partnering to explore the creation of a municipally owned grocery store.

"Really it's filling the gaps for the market and making sure that people have access to all the goods and resources that they need to survive and thrive," Pawar said.

In the past five years on the South Side, store closings have included a Whole Foods, two Targets and three Walmarts. Pawar said the model of offering millions in city subsidies to large operators has failed, but while those businesses were beholden to bottom lines, a city-owned grocery could measure profit in a different way.

"A longer life span, better educational outcomes, and lower rates of disease which over time will save taxpayers money," Pewar said.

Pewar said city-owned groceries have been successful in smaller communities like Baldwin, Fla., but some are skeptical.

"The reason we are considered a food apartheid or in this food apartheid is because of disinvestment, and the disinvestment has come locally from government," said Aisha Butler, Resident Association of Greater Englewood.

People just refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions. And for the politicians representing those people, it’s far easier to blame whitey and racism than their own incompetency.

“a city-owned grocery could measure profit in a different way.”

New definition of profit:

Everybody steals all your stuff!

If they want to give away free stuff it would make more sense to just open up a food bank—at least then you are treating all residents the same.

Otherwise you are just rewarding the criminals and punishing the good citizens.

Thats basically it. Push private grocery stores put by undercutting them and then take over food.

Digital dollar and state owned food.

Just make private businesses illegal so that the government can own the means of production. And distribution. And transportation. Retail. Wholesale. Just nationalize it all. You know you want to.

No, they live longer because they don’t die from gun violence. 20 yr olds getting killed really skews the averages

It’s overt racism to close stores as a way to prevent looting.

Now the looters have no place to get free stuff!.

They will measure the profit of those who stole all the food. It’ll be huge.

It would be amusing to see the city owned stores robbed blind. Tax payers would be on the hook for it, but I’d still like to see the business clueless city officials try to deal with what legitimate business owners have to suffer with.

Gimme a break. They’re complaining about 10 miles? If I want a head of lettuce, I have to drive 12 miles east or14 miles west to get to a grocery store with fresh produce. Sometimes the Dollar General 5 miles away has one. But never fresh meats.
Thank God I garden. I garden therefore I can.

Don't you just love this re-framing of the issue, folks?

Using that same logic, one could legitimize any expropriation of the "haves" by / for the benefit of the "have-nots."

And, of course, govt. officials will be standing there, acting as the "middlemen," and seeing to it that everything is distributed "fairly."

Regards,

Communism where the state owns everything.

I wonder if they will enforce laws against stealing if they owned the store.

Take away the EBT cards and go back to the old “Government Cheese” system.

Hand out government cheese, canned mystery meat, beans, rice, flour,, sugar, etc. once a month.
