Texas braces for the historic impeachment trial of Attorney General Ken Paxton
NBC news ^ | 9/4/23 | Jane C. Timm

The Texas Senate will convene as a high court Tuesday to consider the impeachment of Attorney General Ken Paxton, the Republican firebrand accused by his own party of taking bribes and abusing his office.

Paxton, 60, has spent the past decade as the right's chief legal attack dog, fighting many of President Donald Trump’s battles from Austin. Lawsuits to overturn the Affordable Care Act, legal protections for undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children — commonly known as “Dreamers” — and the results of the 2020 election made him a popular force for the right, even after he was indicted for securities fraud. But his political support fractured this year when the Republican-controlled Texas House of Representatives voted 121-23 to impeach him on charges of abuse of office and bribery.

Paxton, only the third official in Texas history to be impeached, has denied wrongdoing and vowed to fight the charges in a trial that promises to be a political spectacle as it threatens to tear his party in two.

“It’s not a criminal trial. It’s not a civil trial. It’s a political trial,” Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick said in an interview with Fox 26 Houston, a local television station, this summer.

Patrick, a powerful Republican president of the state Senate, will preside over the high court as judge. Thirty-one Texas senators — the majority of them Republican — will serve as the jury, considering opening and closing statements, witness testimony, cross examination and 20 articles of impeachment.

"Dozens of Texas news stations have announced they’ll stream end-to-end coverage on their websites for free, including KHOU-11 and KVUE."

[snip]

With a resignation off the table, Texas’ deep-red state Senate is the only entity that can oust Paxton before he’s up for re-election in 2026. Excluding Paxton’s senator wife, who’s been recused, 21 of Texas’ 30 remaining senators would need to vote in favor of Paxton’s removal. Anything less and he’ll keep his position.

In May, 121 members of the House voted in favor of impeachment, while just 23 representatives—all Republicans—were against it.

Texas’ Senate is made up of 19 Republicans, including Paxton’s wife, and 12 Democrats. A strict gag order by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who is presiding over the trial, has kept senators from opining publicly about where they stand.

Impeachment requires a 2/3 vote. Paxton needs 10 Republicans to vote against impeachment.

Paxton was the only attorney general who stood up to democrats in 2020. They tried to do the same thing in Texas as they did in GA PA WI MI AZ NV. But Paxton stopped them.

The impeachment against paxton came within a week of his speech to the heritage foundation earlier this year in which he laid out what he saw the democrats do in Texas in 2020 and how he warned Trump in May of 2020—that democrats were doing the same thing in other states around the country. So Trump understood months before the November election in 2020 —what would happen. (but apparently he was in no position to stop it.)

This is the speech. You’ll see exactly why democrats are out for his scalp.

Texas’ deep-red state Senate

I realize that it’s coming from Yahoo, but there isn’t anything “deep-red” about the Texas legislature. Like too many other Red State legislatures, it appears that Texas has more than its fair share of RINOs just looking to cash in on all the backroom deals and corruption.

The Republicans in the Texas House who voted in favor of this hijinx need to be replaced.

“After an investigation spanning five months in both the Texas House of Representatives and the Texas Senate, interviewing over a dozen witnesses and reviewing almost 300,000 pages of documents, the two special prosecutors who were handed a blank check at taxpayers’ expense to find Ken Paxton’s bribe can’t locate one — because it never happened,” Buzbee said in a statement shared with NBC News.

The Democrats cut their teeth on the types of indictments they are currently throwing at Trump when they went after Rick Perry years back. Houston attorney Tony Buzbee mopped the floor with them, Tony was mostly a Democrat at the time. Not anymore and he is running for Houston City Council. He ran for mayor a few years back but the Shelia Jackson-Lee/Rodney Ellis voter fraud companies who have been rigging elections in Harris County for years beat him with fraud. He learned from that and instead this time is running for a city council seat. The Democrats are having a hissy fit over that. Why? Because Buzbee is an uber genius and has a very quirky ability to digest massive amounts of information and retain it. For example, it’s probable he has read the 300,000 pages mentioned above on the Paxton case and has every page in his head. Once on Houston City Council Tony will figure out every teeny tiny thing that they are trying to do that’s sketchy and shove it down their throats. It’s likely Shelia Jackson-Lee (the fake Barbara Jordan) will become mayor because of the voter fraud machine she runs (which won’t work in the district Tony is running in) is massive. Tony will take her apart once he is on Houston city council. I can’t wait.

Paxton is in very good hands by being represented by Tony.

Yes, had the entirety of the Democrats in the Texas House voted against impeachment, Ken Paxton would not be in this situation.

The good thing is that the Texas legislature is only in session for a short period of time every two years. As far as them cashing in since being in the Texas Legislature basically pays $7200 a year plus $221 per diem when in session those in the legislature who aren’t rich can be pretty creative in how they turn a buck.

Over the past several sessions the Texas Legislature has become more progressive and has started to embrace the types of legislation you might see in Virginia or California.

The outcome of a trial today is no longer based upon the nature of the crime or even the nature of the evidence, but rather how well connected to a tyrannical government the accused may or may not be.

It is the same lawfare tactics they used to take out Tom DeLay. Eventually all charges against him were dropped, but he was driven out of the House, before that happened.

It is done to politically destroy powerful Republicans that actually fight against the leftists and deep state.

“Is this the work of the Bush Republican machine?”

That is my understanding. The fact that so many supposed conservatives in the House voted for impeachment tells me that someone who is afraid of losing power is pulling the strings. And the GOP establishment is in great fear of losing power to true conservatives.

President Trump pulled back to the current to allow everyone to see how the GOPe had been playing us for years. They promised us conservative policies when campaigning and then moved to the left once elected. That game is over!
