A Giant grocery store in Southeast Washington, DC, has removed name brands like Advil, Colgate, and Tide from its shelves to better prevent a spike in theft.
Beyond the removal of brands, shoppers at Giant will also be required to show their receipts to security guards before exiting the store. Ira Kress, president of the chain, told the Washington Post that the store can no longer serve the community by keeping its stores at high risk.

Also, I don’t know if this is the case at this store but a lot of stores are doing similar to keep thefts down.
Southeast D.C., Ward 8, the worst part of the city — where the ferals are. Home rule in the Capitol is an unmitigated disaster. If Congress had any cajones, they’d revoke it.
There's a point where stores give up on 'the community' because 'the community' isn't worth sacrificing for. When that happens it'll be a cold day in hell before good people go back.

Now the marauding hordes of looters will need to take the Metro to loot the Giant Food stores in Northwest Washington DC!
(Southeast DC was a crime-infested slum when I worked in DC, 40 years ago.)
One thing they can do is to hand over Anacostia to Virginia.
They do here in suburban New Jersey, too. My county voted for Trump twice, so I don't think receipt checking is a uniquely ghetto thing.

The store is located in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Anacostia, near the Malcolm X Elementary School—not exactly Spring Valley or Tenleytown, if you know DC.
All of this free-for-all looting, and stores having to lock up merchandise, is just going to accelerate the already rapid demise of the brick-and-mortar stores. They (and shopping malls) are absolutely finished.
I was a distributor for McKee products for 25 years.
Had an assistant manger, he ran the night stock crew, for Walmart tell me how they operated. They would tell night stockers to graze on vendor products, because they were guaranteed sales. I am not a fan of walmart.
Before it’s over, they may need to hire snipers to protect the goods and the paying customers.
So DC shoplifters/thieves only steal brand name products and leave generics on the shelves?
Eventually the local D governments will have to take over and run the food stores. The pillaging will continue, as you noted. But the government can run the stores at a loss (to an extent), where a private company cannot.
There is one more factor to consider. Even well-intentioned D leaders cannot do anything competently. Their minds are always in The Land of Make Believe.
So no way can this end well. And of course it’s the innocent folks in the community who will suffer the most.
No, I live in a red county too. My county actually arrests shoplifters. The Rite Aids and Walgreens still have products on the shelves unsecured. Not sure how much longer that will be the case.
I’m in the midwest so I don’t have to deal with this...yet. I remember years ago my Walmart Market locked up all the makeup because, as the clerk said, “it keeps walking out the door”. I noticed that changed - probably someone cried racism. I hate stores now. I just had my monthly groceries delivered so I don’t have to deal with the crazies. In my jammies, sipping coffee, putting the groceries away. Life is good.
American civilization is crumbling. Maybe we should divide America into city states and what remains will be the United States of Flyover Country. We can then force Democrats in flyover country to move to and live in city states. They vote for this crap.
How about removing the entire store from Washington DC?
