The FReeper Canteen Presents... Happy Labor Day! September 4, 2023 |
| H I S T O R Y | Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival. It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day. The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism. In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday. Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries. |
For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women. Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder. | T O D A Y |

So what about you? How are you celebrating Labor Day? Please remember that The Canteen is here to support and entertain our troops and veterans and their families, and is family friendly. | |

Good evening, radu...did the weather allow you and Champ to do some more mowing?
The wind seems to have finally stopped here. Some more rain overnight, and a yard full of tree trash that will need to be picked up. Maybe I will do some of that labor on labor Day. LOL!

Thanks for tonight's Labor Day celebration, Kathy!
I labored for years, now I just labor in retirement; it's a tough job but somebody has to do it. 😁

Howdy, Kathy.
No, no mowing today. It was hot, muggy, and no breeze so Champ got to rest. The ol’ bum back is a little cranky and it doesn’t mind the break. LOL Tomorrow is going to be a little hotter so any labor will be inside - - housework. :-)
I saw it had rained earlier today up there, then stopped for a bit. Light rain at the airports again now though.
That tree trash will hang around and wait until you have some free time to pick it up. You need to snag a couple of kids who cut through your yard to cross the creek to get to school and give them a couple of bucks to pick it up for you. :-)

Howdy, PRO.
How’s your weekend been? Did your hot temps head off again and let y’all have pleasant weather?
Our weekend weather was really nice until today. Then it got hot again.

Today was a day of making music, from start to finish. First at a house party, and then a gig on the waterfront in Plymouth.
I am exhausted!
I plan on riding tomorrow.

Hi radu, good weekend so far and we've moved into Fall temps quickly; 80's/high 70's is just fine.
Just visited Robin, son and the pups today and did a few 'guy' things for her.
Any museum/kitteh time this weekend?
